Beehive

Unified, harmonious community. Symbol of Mormonism. Masons considered the beehive to be a symbol of industriousness and productivity.

In Greece, the beehive was often used as the shape of a tomb, suggesting immortality. The beehive is the official state emblem of Utah because it relates to industry and the pioneer virtues of thrift and perseverance. An interpretation of this symbol appeared in an 11 October 1881 article in Salt Lake City's Deseret News, stating: "The hive and honey bees form our communal coat of arms. ... It is a significant representation of the industry, harmony, order and frugality of the people, and of the sweet results of their toil, union and intelligent cooperation." Examples of pioneer use of the hive can be seen on Brigham Young's home (known as the Beehive House) in Salt Lake City.
