Lisa,

Do you happen to have any stray HALEs, HAYWOODs, or STRICKLANDs in your data?

I have a gggrandmother, Roda HALE(s), b. 1825 in NC, who married Kinyard STRICKLAND in Alabama. His family had lived in Pickens County for at least 15 years before Roda and he married, so I'm assuming she was from either Pickens County or an adjacent county. They named a son Henry Hinton Haywood Strickland! I haven't been able to located HALE(s) anywhere nearby except in Greene County and have not identified Roda's family.

Hopefully,
Polly

Dear Fellow Researchers,

On a recent research trip, I heard a story of a relative that was born in Hale County, but that her birthplace became part of Greene later. Does anyone know about this border change, its timespan and the area that was affected. Thanks.

Subject Thanks-Answer Greene and Hale County Border Change

Thanks you for the many replies and information. I have attached a summary of the replies for  others who may be interested.

You may have this backwards. Everything was Greene County until 1867 when Hale County was formed.

Greene Co., AL was created from Marengo and Tuscaloosa Counties in 1819, Hale County was created from Greene,  Merango, Perry and Tuscaloosa Counties in 1867.

My Animap program shows that in 1867,  the county of Hale was formed from Greene and a little of the southern part of Tuscaloosa. Essentially all of Hale was in Greene prior to 1867.

http://home.earthlink.net/~rodbush/GALHisto.htm", Greene Co. Also try Hale Co. on Genweb for AL.

I think it was right the opposite. Prior to 1867, what is now Hale County,was part of Greene, Tuscaloosa, Bibb and Perry counties. Probably your relative was born in that section of Greene that became >part of Hale. What today is Greensboro,Sawyerville,etc was in Greene while today's Moundville (old Carthage) was in Tuscaloosa. Hope this helps.

Greene County was formed on December 13, 1819 from parent counties of Marengo and Tuscaloosa, with the county seat being Eutaw. Hale County was formed from Greene, Marengo, Perry and Tuscaloosa, with the county seat being Greensboro. Your best bet for information on Alabama genealogy is http//www.rootsweb.com/~algenweb/county.html.

Greene County was named for Gen. Nathaniel Greene, a RI hero of the American Revolution, who led our troops at Guilford and Eutaw Springs and retook Charleston. It was formed on 13 December 1819 from parts of Marengo (formed 1818) and Tuscaloosa (formed 1818) Counties and from Indian land from the Choctaw Cession of 1816. Many men who came down the Natchez Trace with Andrew Jackson for the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815, went back through Central Alabama looking for good land. Since settlers may have arrived there as early as 1812, records of the parent Counties could have some information on these first families. Blessed with fertile soil and level or rolling land, Greene County was the primary Alabama County for agriculture as late as 1845. Greene County is one of several Centralwest and Southwest Alabama Counties that were occupied by white settlers as soon as land was made available by Federal Treaty. Although there are no records to substantiate early occupation, Federal records indicate that title was granted for Greene County parcels of land as early as 1812 (note this could be Greene Co. MS). Some occupation was possible from Spanish and French settlements to the South. In fact the French Colony at Demopolis from 1818 to 1830 was said to have extended into parts of Greene County. Pickens County was formed in 1820 from Tuscaloosa County, Sumter County was formed in 1832 from the Choctaw Indian Cession of 1830 and Hale County was formed in 1867 from Greene, Marengo, Perry and Tuscaloosa Counties.

Subject Thanks-Answers ? Local Slave Auction Blocks/Brokers ?

I received several relies requestng I forward them any found information. So, I am sending the message to the

entire group.  Thanks to everyone for your kind assistance.

I am getting a new book on the topic "Slave Auctions" by Donna Wyatt Howell. It is 6th is a book series she is writing. The $10 costs includes shipping. I ordered my copy though the publisher American  Legacy Books, POB1393, Washington, D.C. 20013, 202-737-7827.

I was reading a family book written by a Greene county person and it had articles on a white marble slave block in Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa newspaper articles, state that this tall white pillar had stood at a corner next to a bank for years, without people remembering or noting that it was the old slave auction block. It just disappearred one day. There is a commitee/assoc/group formed to document its history. Several newspaper articles on the stone and group were shown. This is all within the last  30 years.

I dont know about Clarke county but for Columbus Ga and Montgomery Al they were being brought across Ga from NC ports.  Do you have someone you think was involved  in the trade? I think I had a ancester involved in abt 1820

I don't know the answer to your question. But I think the answer might depend on the time frame you're thinking of. If it was before 1825 or so, it seems like Mobile or New Orleans would have been more likely, simply because of the size of the towns. That my have been the case even after  1825--I'm guessing on the year.  New Orleans was supposedly a location where,  before 1815-1830, top dollar was paid for  slaves. Natchez is another location where the population and the number of large farms  would have created a demand for slaves.  Unfortunately, I haven't read anything  about the years after that.  I hope I've helped a bit.

Kinnard (Kinniard, Kinyard, Kenyard, Rinroid, etc!) STRICKLAND married Rhoda HALE about 1838. His parents brought their family to Greene County, AL, from NC in the 1820s. They later were listed in Pickens County. Rhoda was born in NC in 1825. I suspect she lived in Greene County prior to her marriage. Kinyard and Rhoda named one of their sons Henry Hinton Haywood Strickland. I suspect HINTON and HAYWOOD are also family names in addition to HALE(S). I have been trying to identify Rhoda HALE's parents for years.

My gggrandparents, REV. JOHN DUBOIS and LOUISA WILLIAMS came to AL from SC by 1820; they were married in Autauga County, and settled in Perry County before moving to Greene County by 1834.  JOHN DUBOIS was born June 28, 1798 in Charleston, South Carolina, St. Thomas, St. Denis Parish, and died January 31, 1884. He married LOUISA WILLIAMS January 06, 1825 in Autauga County, AL, daughter of JOSIAH WILLIAMS and JUDITH ELMORE. She was born January 05, 1799 in Virginia, and died March 19, 1877 in Eutaw, Alabama.   Like his father before him, Rev. John DuBois was a Methodist minister and businessman. He manufactured cotton gins, earning three patents on improvements made to the DuBois Cotton Gin. Married 52 years, John and Louisa were also blessed with seven children, including at least two doctors, a dentist, an inventor and one or more teachers. Among their many descendants and their spouses are counted doctors, lawyers,   teachers and preachers, and several business entrepreneurs. Rev. John performed many of the marriages that are found in the Orphans'

Court records.
LOUISA WILLIAMS DuBOIS' sister, ANN "NANCY" WILLIAMS, married JOSEPH W. HOUCK, who was Rev. John's best friend from their Charleston boyhood. Rev. John's writings about the history of Methodism in SC and AL form the basis of the book "Necessary Fried Chicken." John and Louisa are buried in Eutaw.

My great-grandparents, DR. RUFUS DUBOIS and MARTHA JANE SLATON, were the parents of eight children. Dr. DUBOIS was for many years the president of the Alabama Dental Association. He was born and buried in Greensboro, having been away from Greensboro long enough to be educated, married, and serving in the 8th Alabama, Hatch's Brigade, CSA. Their male children were named after Methodist ministers and neighbors.  I would love to learn more about the people after whom they were named.

Children of RUFUS DUBOIS and MARTHA SLATON are

My ancestors, James and David Mansker, lived and owned property in the Greene Co. (now Hale) are in the 1820 and 1830's. Later, their daughter was married in 1842 in Pickens, AL to Pharas Landrum, and they moved to Attala Co., MS. David and Eleanor Mansker's land patents are on the Mansker Chronicles. I need information about where they came from and where David is buried. He died in Alabama.

Hi Lisa! Let me know if you ever run across EMILY W. PASCHAL (1811-1881), who married JOHN WESLEY MONROE; their son WILLIAM OLIVER MONROE (1835-1901) was the newspaper editor in Eutaw who married SARAH ELIZABETH JANE DUBOIS in 1866. I believe all these people were buried in the cemetery in Eutaw, and when I was there last April, someone had been recently doing rubbings on the grave markers, so someone else must be researching this family.

Greetings. We have been receiving inquiries about when the Heritage Book of Greene County will be ready. We met today and Feb. 25th will be the pick-up date for the book materials. I am tired of dealing with it and I promise that it will be ready unless I become ill or there is a computer failure. I do have two other computers to work with but pray that this one will continue to perform for me. The materials will come back to us once or maybe twice for proofing and then we have to help with the name index. I want to warn you that even with all of the additional proofing that we do, an error may occur. I know because it happened to a story that I submitted for the Tuscaloosa County book. I went back to my story in the computer and I had the correct spelling.

So far, we have almost three hundred stories processed and several more to process. I feel that you will get your money's worth. By the way, several of you who posted to the Roll Call this past weekend for Greene County did not respond when I was begging and pleading for stories. Where were you?

Sincerely,
Sybil N. Phillips, Proofreader for Heritage Book

Trying to find information on Ingram Day, could have been born Ala, Ga, SC or Va (might as well throw in the other 46). I suspect he is kin, possibly father or brother to Ransom Day who was also in Greene County Alabama. Ingram was married to a Rachel, can't seem to find out her maiden name. Ingram died between 1840 - June 10 1844 in Greene County. Ingram shows up in Greene as early as 1823: Day, Ingram 04 Dec 1823 Land Record Old St Stephens Land Office. I can't find him before that date. He apparently remained in Greene until his death as he is on the 1830 and 1840 census. As far as I know, children of Ingram and Rachel Day are Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, Mary "Polly", John, Louisa, Amanda J., Francis Caroline, William J., all children being born before 1835. Any leads towards Ingram's parents/siblings or Rachel's surname would be grrrrrrrreatly appreciated.

MY ELUSIVE ANCESTOR

I went searching for an ancestor. I cannot find him still.
He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will.
He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences.
He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. Census.

He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame.
And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name.
His parents came from Europe. They should be upon some list
of passengers to U.S.A., but somehow they got missed.

And no one else in this world is searching for this man.
So, I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can.
I'm told he's buried in a plot with tombstone, he was blessed;
but the weather took engraving, and some vandals took the rest.

He died before the county clerks decided to keep records.
No Family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts.
To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans,
Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES.

I have made maps of Samuel Forwood's land. He had a plantation most of which was purchased from the Murphy plantation at Gosport, Alabama. I also made maps of Wm Coate's land at Clarksville, Alabama. I don't know of any others, but the info probably could be derived from the Bureau of Land Managment sites on the internet with the name of the plantation owner.

I have been studying the Alabama River side  some, Gosport to the river cutoff south,  without much success or results, just a  little general knowledge.   Scotch Lumber Company has some logging camp  info from the 1880's to 1950 or so. The book "Logging Railroads of Alabama" by  Thomas Lawson, Jr., Cabbaage Stack Publishing,   P.O. Box 19912 Birmingham AL 35219 has a  lot about camp locations but few maps.

Clarke County Historical Society publications have several articles on the old salt works. I believe there were more than one. CCHS has a project to make an index and put that and all the articles for the last 25 years on a web site but that is probably at least  a year away if it happens. Those quarterly publications are available at several  libraries, without an index.

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/

after you find out the sections and townships, then go to Microsoft terraserver for a topographic map or satellite map of the area. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/   It takes some study and work, but it can be done.

The November 1999 issue of Reader's Digest had an article titled "Coming Soon The Next Great Flu Epidemic," by Rachel Wildavsky. It mentions the 1918 epidemic, although it doesn't spend much time talking about it in the article. It does say "...in less than two years took at least 21 million lives. Three waves of Spanish flu--so named because it was at first erroneously thought to have started in Spain-- swept the globe.  Virtually everyone was infected, and up to three percent of them died."  It goes on to say, "Geographic isolation was no particular protection.  In the Alaska Territory, the mortality in some villages was as high as 90 percent. All told, at least 500,000 Americans perished." The article mentions less than two years to span the globe, but the peak year was 1918, therefore, it is called the "1918 epidemic."

I don't know anything about the epidemic in Alabama, but I will try to write my grandmother and ask if she remembers lots of flu that year. She would have been 18 or 19, so she would probably remember if many people in the area were sick. I am not sure if she was living in Womack Hill or in Jackson, AL, about that time.

Janis.

Subject Re 1918 Epidemic

The 1918 Flu epidemic was so severe that almost all of the cemeteries here in Fannin County Texas had graves dug ahead of time for the unknown next to die. In the town I am near they went ahead and opened a whole new annex to the cemetery across the road from the old one, this is very common. I am transcribing the county cemeteries to the Tombstone Transcription Project. They told people to tie a white cloth to the mailbox or the porch if in town if they needed a body picked up. Preachers & volunteers went out to check on families from distance , they would blow a horn or ring a bell and someone in the house would yell out their condition and if they needed anything desperately . These volunteers would tell them if they wanted to know about this or that family . So messages of death or living came through. Most families lost someone . In the town nearest me about 1000 lived there at that time and Somewhere about 15% died. There are a couple of cases in the countryside where the entire family died before anyone checked on them. Some thought it would be the end of days and Christ was coming. Many children were orphaned during this time. And the 1920 census will show children who weren't accounted for before in familes , many were neighbors , friends and relatives who were taken in. I know we face a possibliltiy but oh I hope not in our lifetime.

Hello,

I am just fine but was having trouble with the ALGREENE-L address. We sent our materials for the Heritage Book away last Friday, March 10. Do not know when we can expect the finished product.

I was worn out but happy to see those boxes on their way. By the way, the price will go up at the end of March and we need to sell 333 more books in order to pay our debt. They will make wonderful Christmas, birthday or if you just want to do something nice for someone gifts. It is estimated that the book will be 310 pages and we had 480 stories - family and topical. There were a lot of people who passed through Greene County on their way to other places, especially Texas.

Let us hear from you.

In the year and a half history of this list, I am happy to say that there have been no flame wars. I intend to keep it this way.  In the first off-topic post concerning Confederate-American as a listing on the census I let it slide, assuming that it would end there and folks would get back to genealogy without re-fighting the War. However, it did not end there, and I must step in. Therefore, I am emphasizing the following rules There will be NO further discussion of "confederate-American" designation on the census, nor anything else that can be construed to be inflammatory or disrespectful of other list-members. Failure to heed this warning will result in you being unsubscribed to the list. I know many of you will want to write that you refuse to apologize for the past, and that our ancestors died for this reason or that--but DO IT OFF THE LIST.

Meanwhile, to restate DO NOT POST ANYTHING FURTHER ON THE ALGREENE LIST UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY GENEALOGICALLY RELATED. DO NOT POST ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH "CONFEDERATE-AMERICAN" DESIGNATION ON THE CENSUS. AND DO REMAIN RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS ON THE LIST. FAILURE TO MEET THESE RULES WILL RESULT IN YOUR EXPULSION.

To those of you who are expecting a copy of the Greene County Heritage Book in July

I hate to tell you this but the book is not ready. We are just now getting our stories back from the company for a proofing and this is most time consuming as their typists do a poor job. Too, the stories have come back to us single-spaced and small print.

I am disgusted with the whole thing and frustrated. I can not wait until we get the finished product and I can say good-bye to it. I mailed letters to the committee and have heard from three who say they will do what they can to help proof. I did 106 by myself and have sent them back. Have asked for at least one hundred to come at a time for proofing but will have to wait and see if they come through.

Watch for post to the AlGreene web site.

Subject James McCarter, early-mid 1800's

My great-great-grandfather George Alexander McCarter married Ann Josephine Elizabeth Barksdale. Ann's parents were James Madison Barksdale and Louisa Dorothea Moreland White. In researching this family, I learned that JM Barksdale and LDM White were married in Greene Co., AL. I was checking the Greene Co. webpage, and discovered that there was a James McCarter, who was an early inhabitant of Greene Co. I have a record that indicates that George Alexander's father (or grandfather?) was one James McCarter. According to other records that I have, James died before 1847. I have no other information on him. Based on what I read on the Greene Co. webpage, there is a will recorded for a James McCarter - Wills Book "C", covering years 1840 -1864, p. 076. This would cover the date of my James' death. Also, there is a James McCarter listed in the Greene Co., AL Orphans Court Record "B", pp. 151 and 385.

Is there anyone in Greene Co. who has access to these 2 books and could look up these pages for me? I would appreciate it very much!

Thanks, Sharon Hamlett

Subject McCarter, Barksdale, Wood

I am at a deadend, so I thought I'd post everything I know one more time, in hopes that something will ring a bell with someone somewhere!

George Alexander McCarter was born approximately 1831-1832 in Alabama. This I know according to census records. At some point prior to 1847, George, his siblings Nancy and John and their mother, Melissa, moved to Pontotoc Co., MS. This, too, I know from census records. In 1850, George, Nancy and John are living in the household of William C. Crawford, his wife Melissa and their 2-year-old son. However, according to probate records, in 1849, Wm Crawford relinquished his legal guardianship (as husband to Melissa McCarter) of the 3 children (actually teenagers) to Silas H. Wood. The bond for this action was signed by Silas Wood, W.C. Crawford and Sterling Abernathy. Silas Wood was married to Eliza(beth) Caroline McCarter (she was born in 1829; George A. was born in 1831 - was she his older sister?); Sterling Abernathy was married to Elizabeth Caroline Ware. (Speculation - was Melissa McCarter's maiden name Ware? There is a marriage listing in Jefferson Co., AL for a !

Melissa Ware to a James N. McCarty.) In an Inventory of Real and Personal Estate of the 3 McCarter children submitted by Silas Wood in May 1849, there is a line " . . .infants and inheritors by descent of Alexander McCarter deceased through and by right of James N. McCarter, also now deceased, the son and of the heirs of said Alexander McCarter . . ." Written right above "James N. McCarter" are the words "their paternal ancestor." The only place online that I have found a James N. McCarter is on the BLM website, where it shows a deed was issued to a James N. McCarter on April 1, 1837 in Pickens Co. However, there is no listing for him in the cemetery book of Pickens Co. or Pontotoc Co., MS. There are several Alexanders on various sites, the most likely at this point to be one found in Jefferson Co., AL where the BLM website shows that an Alexander McCarter was issued 4 deeds on April 21, 1824 - 2 in his name alone, 1 in conjunction with a Henry Jordan, and 1 with a Jam!

es McCartney. Also, according to other researchers, Elizabeth Caroline McCarter (wife of Silas Wood and possible sister of George, Nancy and John) was born in Jefferson Co., AL.

In other words, according to my speculation - Alexander McCarter was living in Jefferson Co., AL in the early 1820's. He had a son named James N. McCarter (McCarty?). James married Melissa Ware(?) in 1828 in Jefferson Co. Elizabeth Caroline was born the following year; George A. was born in 1831; Nancy was born in 1833; and John W. was born in 1835. By 1837, the family is in Pickens Co., AL. At some point after this, one of 3 things happened 1) James dies in Pickens Co., and Melissa moves her family to MS, where she remarries, 2) James dies in Pickens Co., Melissa remarries and moves her family to MS, or 3) James and family move to Pontotoc; he dies there, and Melissa remarries.

In any case, after the move, Elizabeth Caroline married Silas Wood in Pontotoc Co., AL in 1845; Nancy married James F. Wood in 1852 in Pontotoc Co., and George married Ann Josephine Elizabeth Barksdale in 1859 in Pontotoc Co. No further information on John.

Now, it turns out that Ann Josephine Elizabeth Barksdale (wife of George A.) was the daughter of James Madison Barksdale and Louisa Dorothea Moreland White. Ann was born in 1839 in Pickens Co., AL. This is where she met George, her future husband. Her parents (James and Louisa were married in 1832 in Greene Co., AL. There were many McCarters in Greene Co. (as most of you other McCarter researchers are well aware of), but I have been unable to connect mine to them.

So, there is my story. I am looking for anything at all that will help me further my research with James and Alexander. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly welcomed.

Thanks so much for reading this,

Sharon Hamlett

PS - I am unable to travel to AL to check for possible wills and/or probate records in Pickens, Greene or Jefferson Co. The probate records I have on George and siblings were found for me by a helpful researcher in Pontotoc Co., MS and sent to me. I am not asking that someone go ferret this info out for me, but if someone has a reasonably good idea that there might indeed be some such records in either of those 3 counties, I will be more than happy to send for them. I just don't want to waste a lot of their time and my money looking for records that are not there. Would it be possible to obtain them from ALDAH?

I have information on the 8th Alabama - Hatch's brigade [cavalry] consisting of many from Greene, especially Greensboro [part of Greene Co. before the war.] I have a partial roster for soldiers from Greene County if you wish a lookup. An article on the 8th should be eventually appearing in the Alabama Heritage Book series for Greene County. The 8th Alabama Cavalry under Lt. Colonel Lemuel D. Hatch of Greensboro and Colonel Charles P. Ball* was formed between September, 1863 and March, 1864. Mostly comprised of volunteers from men (and boys) who were otherwise exempt from service, the 8th Alabama Cavalry (Ball's-Hatch's) was formed with the intent of local defense, rather than being employed in heavy battle elsewhere. Not surprisingly, however, this idealistic goal gave way to the necessities usually encountered in war, and many of this regiment did in fact encounter skirmishes outside of Alabama. The 36th alabama, formed at Mount Vernon Arsenal May 12, 1862, also included many from Greene County. The 36th participated at Chicamauga, Lookout Valley, and at Missionary Ridge. The regiment wintered at Dalton, Georgia, and was engaged at Crow's Valley, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, the Atlanta battles, Jonesboro, and middle Tennessee, including Nashville. Company C, as a part of the army under Brigadier General J. T. Holtzclaw, CSA, and commanded by Captain  W.N. Knight surrendered 5/4/1865 at Citronelle, Alabama. My great-granfather, DR. RUFUS DUBOIS served in the 8th, and his youngest brother, JOHN ELMORE WINBOURNE DUBOIS, served in the 36th. Another brother, DR. SAMUEL PATTON DUBOIS, served in Louisiana. A fourth brother, DR. JOSEPH CORNELIUS DUBOIS, is missing from service records unless his name is misspelled.

I have been promised that things are going to move along at a faster pace for the Greene County Hisotry Book. This project should have been finished but I could not get any results until just this week. I have proofed the type-setting for the 150 Topical Stories and received the first 36 of Family Stories today. There is a new person typing, the print is so much better and he has promised fewer errors to correct. To add to the chaos of my life, we will be moving into Tuscaloosa in Sept. I will survive the move and will see the book finished. My e-mail will remain the same. Watch for future updates about the book.

To All of You who Submitted Stories or Ordered this BOOK! I have finished proofing through the L's of the Family Story Section but there is one very long story that was submitted in all CAPS. I have to re-type it before Jack will have anything to do with it. Can not blame him. Do not plan to give the book as a Christmas gift in 2000. Keep it in mind for 2001. I hate to continue apologizing for the non-existing book but I have worked my self silly and will continue until the book is in print. Making a move after being in a place for 23 years has not helped. The wall papering should be finished by tomorrow afternoon. The dog seems to be adjusting but the poor kitties are another story. Should I rub butter on their feet to keep them from leaving? Our poor Alabama football team needs your prayers. The season has not been what we were promised by the media before the season opened. I will continue to update you on the progress of the book. Another Comm. member also moved to Tuscaloosa and she will be helping with the indexing. She is a history person.

Keep your cats in the house for at least a week. Then I would try taking each one out separately in the yard for a short time. Once we when we moved, my cat ran off for over 6 months and then walked up one Sunday morning as we were leaving for church. Good luck.

Happy Holiday Greetings to All

Have finished proofing stories A-M and have been told that I have 135 more to do and that will be the end until I receive the material for indexing. Jack may have a magic trick for doing the indexing that I have not heard about. This time last year we were looking forward to the end and now I hope that St. Patrick's Day will find us on the way to the printer. Jack Shotts in Huntsville, Al. has been easy to work with. I do not mind telling him about things that might be a problem and why. We discuss through e-mails what should be or what should be done differently.

 I have a Gateway computer and we are getting a Gateway store very near to where we live. We are getting settled in our new location but can not find the Christmas candles. We moved those things and what we did with them I do not know.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season. This time last year we were also being told how to prepare for the new millennium and what we could expect. I still have some of the bottled water. We bought four gallons. Used part of one on a trip.

Sincerely, Sybil N. Phillips, Proofreader

Subject 1860 Census Look up

Is there anyone on this list who can do a 1860 Greene Co. census lookup for me? I am looking for William N. Collins, wife (Permelia) Mary Collins. A son, William H. Collins, was born in Greene Co. about 1859-1860 to this  couple. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nova,

Thanks for the Collins info. I know that my William Collins lived in Greene County about 1860. Went there  from Ga. and returned to Ga. about 1867. Thanks again.

Subject Poorhouses chronicled on Web

Poorhouses chronicled on Web "Site is clearinghouse for information about   the forgotten needy. by Paul J. Ellion, AP Hillsdale - She began by looking for information on her grandmother "Emma" and discovered a family history that at first surprised her, then later inspired her on to a new mission. Linda Cannell, known as the "Poorhouse Lady," began her Web site, www.poorhousestory.com to chronicle the history of America's poorhouses  and the destitute people that history forgot. Her site is a clearinghouse for information on the numerous poorhouses that dotted the American landscape in the 19th century. The story of the Will Carleton Poorhouse in Hillsdale county is told on her site. There is also a 1850 Census listing for the poorhouse in Fayette Township, with Lorenzo and Susan Dowd listed as the <keepers of the poorhouse.>"

This is taken from a newspaper article given me. To see the entire article, search on the title. It is a recent article, but I do not know its date. It is too long to re-type. I do not know the newspaper. I do not have web access. However, I thought this information and web site was worth passing on to others.

Subject - Legacy 3.0 Is Now Free

- Legacy 3.0 Is Now Free

The Millennia Corporation made an announcement this week that should interest a lot of genealogists their excellent Windows genealogy program, Legacy 3.0, is now available free of charge.  Legacy is one of the better genealogy products available and has   had a retail price of $49.95 (U.S. funds). In the May 10, 2000 edition of this newsletter, I wrote, "Legacy has always been one of my favorite genealogy programs since the first day that I saw it in operation. The new version didn't let me down; it improves on an already top-notch program. If you are thinking about moving up to a more powerful genealogy program, I would suggest that you consider Legacy 3.0."

Now it will be very easy to "consider" Legacy 3.0 since you can download it online at no charge. You also can obtain it on CD-ROM disk, although Millennia Corporation will charge a few dollars for the disk and postage. Millennia first released Legacy over two and a half years ago. Since that time it has grown to be one of the more popular genealogy programs in the market today, even with a retail price of about fifty dollars. "Today's announcement marks a big change in the distribution of the product," said David Berdan, president of Millennia. "We expect a huge increase in our user base in the near future. We also have plans for many new products and features."

It's surprising to see a program this powerful available for free. How will Millennia make money? By offering a new, enhanced version for $19.95. The company apparently expects that you will try the free program and will love it. They probably expect a lot of people will then pay the extra money to add even more functionality. I believe the Gillette Corporation used to do something similar with razors they gave the relatively expensive razors away free and then made millions of dollars selling razor blades to fit the razors. It might be easy to think that the free version of Legacy is a "dummied down" edition. Not true. It is the same as the full commercial version of Legacy 3.0 that Millennia Corporation was selling for $49.95 until this week. The new $19.95 version appears to be what I would call "version 4.0" although the Millennia Corporation prefers to call it the "Deluxe Edition."

The free version of Legacy 3.0 includes the following * Easy data entry:
* Unlimited file size
* To Do List and Correspondence Log
* Web Page Creation
* IntelliMerge, one of the nicest implementations I have seen for merging two databases together
* A powerful Report and Book generator
* An excellent method for recording source citations
* Multiple family files in split screens
* GEDCOM import and export
* Spell Checking
* Search and Replace
* Much, much more

The Deluxe Edition, available for $19.95, adds the following:
* It can produce PDF files from previewed reports. These can be sent by email and read in the free Acrobat Reader from Adobe.
* Compare Two Files for Duplicates allows you to see if there are individuals or lines in another file that you might want to import.
* The new Advanced Sourcing features lets you assign sources to a group of individuals or marriages at one time. You can select the fields to be sourced.
* Many reports can now include a Location Index showing on what pages each location is used.
* A new Relationship Calculator lets you see every way any two people are related. You can also print nice Relationship Charts with colored boxes and text.
* When doing Merges you can specify any pair of individuals as being "Not Duplicates." Oftentimes you may have felt like you were wearing out the Skip To Next button as you came upon pairs of individuals you knew were not duplicates but had similar names and information. Now you can mark these pairs as Not Duplicates so they don't continually show up in subsequent merge sessions.
* There is a new Last Report button on the main screen that lets you quickly go to the last report screen you used.
* You can now Renumber RINs and MRINs (Record and Marriage Record Individual Numbers). You can renumber specific individuals or marriages as well as groups of records.
* You can now Reuse Deleted RINs and MRINs when adding new records and importing.
* You can select the color of boxes on Ancestor, Descendant and Pedigree Charts.

Both the free version and the Deluxe version of Legacy 3.0 require the following a Pentium class computer with a minimum of 16 megabytes of memory (32 megabytes or more recommended), 35 megabytes of available hard disk space, Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me or NT.

If you are unhappy with your present genealogy software, or if you would like to trade up to a free program that probably is more powerful than what you are using today, I would suggest you take Legacy 3.0 for a test drive. You may like it better than what you have been using, even if you paid a lot of money for your current software. Subject Greene County History Book Up-Date

Happy New Year. I promised that I would try to keep you up-to-date on the status of the book so here it is. I am proofing a batch of 33 stories and will have 82 left to finish as Jack types and sends them to me. I am feeling much better about the book and have seen a few pages of what it will look like. I believe that we should be going to the printer sometimes in Feb. I have appreciated all of your support and words of encouragement.

Had 21 for a late Christmas lunch yesterday and my siblings like our house. Of course, this made me feel good. Our lake has been freezing as Tuscaloosa is having some cold weather this year. The tornado that killed 11 people here on Dec. 16th was about two miles south of us. It hit one of the neighborhoods where we had looked at a house. My daughter looked at an article in this morning's paper and recognized a girl that she had gone to elementary school with. The person and her son were killed.

I wish a Prosperous and Happy Year for All of You.
