James Alexander Flanagan and Maranda F. King

 

 

James Alexander Flanagan was born December 21, 1842, in Pontotoc, Mississippi.  He was the son of Philip Pinkney Flanagan of Pontotoc, Mississippi and Elizabeth Meadors of Greene County, Alabama.  He was the grandson of William Flanagan, Sr. and Sarah Self of Georgia.  He moved to Greene County at an early age and attended all schools in Greene County.

 

He enlisted as a confederate soldier September 1, 1861, Company B, 36th Alabama Regiment and later served in the Tennessee Army until 1865.  He was wounded three different times and was in all of the important engagements of that war.

 

On March 25, 1869, he married Maranda F. King.  She was born on September 18, 1842 in Greene County and was the daughter of Littleberry King and Molsey Horton of Greene County, Alabama.  Her grandparents were Jesse Horton and Sarah Chamblee of Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama.

 

James and Maranda had six children and all were born in Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama:

(1)     Molsey Elizabeth (Lizzie) was born June 22, 1870, and died August 6, 1947.  She married Roland Arthur Hester, Sr. on November 8, 1891, at Cedar Creek Church, Franklin County, Alabama.  He was the son of William Carroll Hester and Jane Bolton.  They are both buried at Cherry Hill Cemetery, Franklin County, Alabama.  Lizzie and Arthur had eight children: Grover Cleveland, James Flanagan, Carroll Roy, Vester Borden, Roland Arthur, Jr., Annie Mary, Glenn, and Edward Norris.

(2)     Mary Lula (Auntie) was born September 9, 1872, and died in 1935.  She had typhoid fever in 1879 at the same time her brothers did, but she recovered even after the doctor said that she wouldn’t.  She was married to Thomas Edward Norris on December 28, 1904.  They had three children: Thomas Edward, Jr., Grace, and Miranda Elizabeth.

(3)     James A. was born October 2, 1874, and died of typhoid fever in 1879 at the age of five.  He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Greene County, Alabama.

(4)     Berry Coleman, was born September 8, 1876, and died of typhoid fever in 1879 at the age of three.  He is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Greene County, Alabama.

(5)     Annie Mary, was born October 4, 1879, and died June 9, 1890.  She fell while running with an opened pocketknife and severed her jugular vein and bled to death.

(6)     Albert Vester, was born October 11, 1882, and died on October 13, 1939.  He was married to Lucile Hafner on May 21, 1919.  She was the daughter of Adam Alexander and Mary Palmer.  They had four children: Miranda Virginia, Mary Palmer, Lucille Hafner and Albert Vester.

 

James Alexander Flanagan was a farmer and served in the Alabama House of Representatives.  He died January 31, 1924, and is buried along with his wife, Maranda, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Greene County, Alabama.
