One Descendant of
Littleberry King (1798-1851)
Littleberry King, wife Molsey [Horton] King and
daughter Jane
1. Littleberry (Berry) King was born 17 July 1798[1]
in North Carolina[9] and died 12 November 1851[2] in Greene County,
Alabama. He married Molsey Horton on 22 January 1828 in Greene
County, Alabama[3].
She was born on 4 July 1808[4] in Wake County, North Carolina[9]
and died 21 June 1881 in Greene County, Alabama[5]. She
was the
daughter of Jesse Horton[6] and Sarah (Sally) Chamblee[7].
Both Littleberry and Molsey are buried in the Horton Cemetery[8] in Greene
County, Alabama.
Littleberry King migrated to Greene County, Alabama
from North Carolina[9] before marrying Molsey Horton,
daughter of Jesse Horton and Sarah Chamblee, in Greene County,
Alabama on January 22, 1828. Jesse Horton was the son of Amos
Horton, Jr.[10] a captain in the Revolutionary War[11].
Sarah was the daughter of Isaac Chamblee[12].
Molsey and Littleberry had eleven children, two of
which died in infancy. Littleberry obtained land patents (13 as
Littleberry and 4 as Berry) in Greene
County near the Sipsey river and the present day
Pickens county line[13]. The property where Littleberry
settled more than likely looks a lot like it did Littleberry first
moved there -- there has been very little growth in the area.
Littleberry earned his living by farming cotton, corn, peas and
raising hogs[14].
Littleberry died at the age of 53 with a "pox" type
disease that was treated unsuccessfully with various ointments and
tinctures. According to physician receipts found in his estate file,
the family was given a "discount" because he died[14].
Their oldest son, Alexander, died shortly after Littleberry, leaving
Molsey with eight young children to raise.
Molsey received an inheritance when her parents,
Jesse[15] and Sarah Horton[16] had both passed
away intestate. Molsey was able to keep the farm until she died in
1881 at the age of 73. Both Littleberry and Molsey are buried in the
Horton Cemetery in Greene County[17]. Many of their
children and grandchildren are buried in Pleasant Hill Cumberland
Church Cemetery in Greene County, Alabama.[18]
