This is a copy of an affidavit of made by Ester L. Steele Kimbrough in Kemper Co., Ms., subscribed before J.B. Robinson, Notary Public, 12 March 1901:

The State of Mississippi, Kemper Co. I, Mrs. Esther L. Steele Kimbrough now in my 84th year, having been born Oct. 21st A.D. 1817, am a daughter of Abner Alexander Steele. I have often heard my father say that he was large enough to go and bring back the horses that his father, Aaron Steele and his oldest brother, Wm. Steele, rode to the Army, and that my grand mother (wife of Aaron Steele) Violet Alexander of Mecklenbury was on her death bed when the Tories took the bed from under her. Aaron Steele, and his son William Steele were soldiers in the War of 1776. Esther L. Steele.

In the HISTORY OF DELAWARE (1609-1888), published by the Historical Society of Delaware, page 933,… "On August 19, 1707, two hundred and fifty acres of land, the property of Joseph Moore, was sold by Colonel John French, Sheriff, and purchased by John Steele, who came from Ireland and settled at Philadelphia. John Steele purchased other lands in White Clay Creek Hundred which, at his death, passed into the hands of his son James."

It might be interesting to note here that the counties of New Castle, Sussex, and Kent, now located in Delaware, were at that time a part of the Province of Pennsylvania. A look at a present day map will show the area in which the Steele family lived to be in the northwestern tip of Delaware, next to Cecil County, Maryland, and bounded on the north by Pennsylvania.

From as address delivered on 9 Oct 1932, by Rev. Henry Welborn of the Head of Christiana Church: "It is from 1707 that we date anniversary services. In 1717 Philadelphia Presbytery became to large and was divided into three Presbyteries of which New Castle Presbytery was one. Mr. Gillespie was one of the original members of this reorganization and the elder that represented this church was John Steele. On March 5, 1732, two acres and four perches were leased by James Steele to the elders of this church."" (Note: they chose two elders from each county and each county is now in a different state, Cecil County, MD; New Castle County, Delaware; and Chester County, Pennsylvania.)

Notes for ABNER ELMORE STEELE:

Abner Elmore Steele, son of William Steele, founding elder, was received into membership of the church on September 20, 1860, on examination by the Session. He enlisted in Company C, 11th Alabama Infantry on June 11, 1861 at Clinton for the duration of the war. He was present with the regiment from June to October 1861, though October 24, 1861 he was sent to Richmond on order of the regimental surgeon. Though there is no hospital record of his admission, he did receive a furlough December 7, 1861, apparently when he was released from the hospital. Abner Elmore Steele was wounded in action on June 30, 1862 in the Battle of Malvern Hill, but there is no record of admission to a hospital for these wounds. He was admitted to the General Hospital, Staunton, Virginia, on October 13, 1862, for convalescence from a fever. He was admitted to the Chimborazo Hospital No. 4, Richmond, Virginia, on November 9, 1862, for typhoid fever. Elmore was transferred to Petersburg, Virginia on November 14. He received another furlough March 23, 1863 after his release from the hospital. He apparently was present with the regiment the first half of 1864, but a company muster roll of October 1864 lists him as absent, missing since August 16 and assumed to be a prisoner. Federal prisoner of war records indicate he was captured at Deep Bottom, Virginia, August 17, 1864, at the camp hospital. He was transferred from City Point, Virginia to Point Lookout, Maryland August 22. Elmore was paroled at Point Lookout on February 10, 1865, and transferred for exchange. He was among 2051 paroled Confederate prisoners of war exchanged and received by Confederate officers on February 14/15,1865 at Coxes Landing, James River, Virginia. He was admitted to the Receiving and Wayside Hospital/ General Hospital No. 9, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia, February 15, 1865. Abner Elmore Steele died March 12, 1865 at the General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia. During the war he had suffered numerous attacks of typhoid fever and had been wounded in action.

Notes for IREDELL P. VAUGHAN:

[steele.ftw]

The marriage license of Iredell P. Vaughan and Margaret Reed Steele is in the Greene County Courthouse, Eutaw, Alabama.

Iredell P. Vaughan and Margaret Reed Steele went to Chickasaw County, Mississippi, around 1845 with Margaret Reed's parents and the Baskins.

Records of The Mesopotamia Presbyterian Church - now the Eutaw Presbyterian - show they left in February, 1845.

The 1850 Mississippi Mortality Schedule, July 1, 1849 through June 30, 1850 shows Iredell N. Vaughan, age 1, died November, 1849. Iredell P. Vaughan's tombstone is in the Houston cemetery, there is no marker for Margaret Reed or the one year old child. Iredell is buried in the same plot as his mother-in-law Isabella Reid Baskin.

The 1850 Federal Census - Chickasaw County, Mississippi, shows Isabella L. Vaughan and Mary J. Vaughan in Richard G. Steele and Isabella R. Steele's household.

For further proof that Isabella L. Vaughan was the daughter of Margaret Reid Steele and Iredell P. Vaughan and the granddaughter of Richard G. Steele and Isabella Reid Baskin Steele, see The Alabama Genealogical Register, Volume V Numbers 3 & 4, Whole Number 19, September & December 1963. Copy in Columbus, Ms., Public Library, and Selma, Al., Public Library.

"Eutaw The Builders & Architecture of an Ante-Bellum Southern Town, Clay Lancaster, The Greene Co. Historical Society" describes the house that Iredell Vaughan built, which is the visitors center today.

Iredelle P. Vaughan did not reside long in the house. He sold it for $3,500 on 4 March 1842 to Philip F. Beazley - - - - -

The birth date of Iredell Vaughan, the birth and death date of Margaret Reid Steele and the fact that Margaret Reid Steele is buried in the Houston, Ms., cemetery is taken from the Pulliam section (page 508) of "The History of Chickasaw Co., Ms.) which is in the Pascagoula, Ms., Public Library.

SANDERS - STAPP

Married at 3 o'clock p.m. at the Baptist church at Garden, Dec. 4th, Mr. J.D. Sanders to Miss Alice B. Stapp. Rev. MG. Lofton officiating.

The church was beautifully decorated with evergreens and flowers. A beautiful arch was erected over each aisle and also a large one in front of the pulpit under which the contracting parties stood and from which was suspended a large S.

The bride was becomingly attired in a lovely costume of light serge trimmed in dark ribbon. The bridesmaids, Miss Mattie Maud Sanders, Annie Chappell and Cora Hamiter in dark tan cashmere trimmed in silk and velvet. The groom and gentlemen attendants, Messrs. John Atterberry, John Harper and Henry Sanders were attired in conventional black.

The ushers, D.L. Ball and L.J. Long preceded the bridal party into the church keeping step to the sweet strains of a Wedding March played by Mrs. Rosa L. Chappell. The soft low tunes of the organ accompanied by the solemn impressive marriage ceremony together with the sweet perfume of many flowers seemed to breathe a blessing around the fair young couple which the many friends sincerely trust will follow them through life. After the ceremony the bridal party accompanied by a large number of friends repaired to the residence of the groom where an elegant and bountiful repast awaited them. The dinning room was artistically decorated with evergreens (rest is unreadable)

The following information was given by Joseph E. Sanders, son of Joseph Ditmer Sanders:

J.D. and J.R. Sanders, from an early age, lived in the Garden Community with their Father, a country doctor, brothers and sisters. One brother, T.H. Sanders, ran the Garden store and farmed; W.V. Sanders farmed and served as Justice of the Peace.

J.D. and J.R. Sanders formed a partnership in 1895 and it continued for seventy one years. In the beginning they farmed, did carpentry and operated a sorghum mill. Around the turn of the century these two brothers and their families moved to Carrollton and opened a general mercantile store. They left Carrollton and returned to Aliceville. The store was located on Sanders street.

In Aliceville they started a small saw mill, operated a cotton gin and storage business, ice plant, fertilizer plant, creamery and grist mill. Many pounds of butter were shipped to Alabama College at Montevallo.
