Burial Notes: According to family legend John R. Gray took with him to battle a slave who had instructions and money to bring his body home,should he die in battle. This is, in fact, what happened. The slave went onto the battlefield at Fredricksburg, recovered his body, and took it home by train. When he arrived at the train station at Melton he sent word to the family who dispatched a wagon to retrieve the body.
