Daniel Jones Gandy Obituary
Greene County Democrat, 1941
On the morning of Oct. 7, 1941 about 4 o-clock the death angel visited the Gandy
home and called the very dear and a most precious father, Daniel Jones Gandy to
his place in heaven where he will be with God.
Daniel Jones Gandy was born Feb. 18, 1863 and at the time of his death was 78
years, seven months and 19 days old.
He was the son of Daniel Jones Gandy and Thetna Richardson. He never knew a
father’s love and devotion as his father died in action in the Civil War before
he was born.
Daniel Jones was married to Carrie Elizabeth Maughn in Jan 1890. To them was
born 10 children, three of them already preceded him to the grave. He leaves to
morn his death, two sons, R. H. and G. E. Gandy of Eutaw and five daughters,
Annie Mary Gandy, Mrs. Perry Wilson, Mrs. J. W. Leavelle, and Mrs. Morris Taylor
all of Eutaw and Mrs. Clyde McDaniel of McCool. Miss. He also leaves nineteen
grand-children and four great-grand-children.
He joined the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church at the age of 28 and
there remained a very devoted member of unusual faith until his death. He
attended all services including Sunday school and other meetings besides
preaching. He never shirked his duties no matter how hard they were. He was made
a deacon in the church In 1901 and elder in 1914. His health caused him to miss
very few services. Mr. Gandy loved and lived his faith and always read his
Bible. As long as any of his children can remember, he made us kneel around our
family altar and we knew when our turn came we had to pray each night. Oh! Papa,
we need you for a leader here on earth. We miss you so. There’ll always be a
vacant place in your home and in each of our hearts that will never be filled.
We know that you are through with suffering here on earth and when we meet you
we will find you with the angels around the throne of God.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at four o’clock, conducted by his pastor,
Rev. H. E. Davidson and Rev. Bright of Columbus, after which interment was made
in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. His casket being followed by a large concourse of
sorrowing relatives and friends. His grandchildren bore the beautiful flowers to
his grave. Honorary pallbearers were Messrs. Lon Grubbs, Lee Summerville, F. E.
Bambarger, Walton Hamilton, Robert Carpenter, Frank Wilson, L. S. King, and
Harry McGee. Active pallbearers were Messrs. Woodrow Jacobs, Clifton Thomas,
Homer Carpenter, Hopson Stephens, Thomas Eatman, and Charlie Bambarger.
You’re gone dear father, bur not forgotten. Your name and deeds will always be
green in our memory and may the remembrance of your life be as sweet as flowers
unto our future generation.
