My Grandmother, Elizabeth Purse Dykes, lost touch with her Family in the late
1930s or early 1940s. Without knowing what to do or who to contact this has
been an open case in our family life.
I have conducted an internet search of these names. In addition, I have conducted
searches of birth records, midwife records, death records, United States Army Records, and
Railroad Workers Records. I have written similar letters to other individuals whose
names or organizations appeared in the search. If you have or know where I might obtain
any information regarding the history, or whereabouts of any of these individuals or their
families, I would appreciate any assistance which you might be able to give. Thank you in
advance. - Elizabeth Williams virgslim@msn.com
TRUSSELL/JOHNSON/McAllister - 10/28/03 - I am searching for the family of my ggrandmother, Elizabeth Jane
Johnson Trussell, daughter of Mourning Trussell and Martin Johnson. The only info I have

possible that someone could look up cemetrery records for Lavina Ricks b 1828 NC and

apparently died shortly after my ggrandmother Mira (Almira) Reynolds was born in 1848 in
Greene Co. They were all in the 1850 Census (I think) but Mira came to Texas in about 1853
as a orphan. I would really appreciate any info or advice you can give me. Regards, Ralph

COOK - 10/28/03
- My name is Tanika Cook and I am
researching my family (ancestors) from Greene County Alabama. I was wondering if Louis
(Lewis Cook) , daughter Alice and Sara (Sarah), sons Robert and John Cook sounds familiar
to anyone. My ggggrandfather Lewis (Louis) was married to a Mary Dina Isaac, my
ggrandmother Alice had one son (William Henry Cook). My gggrandfather Louis (Lewis) Cook
father's name was William Henry Cook. He came for Virginia and later moved to
Alabama with his wife I think her name was Mary Virginia Cook. If anyone has any
information on any Cooks from Virginia or Alabama please share it with me. The reason for
my being so interested in learning about my ancestors is because my grandfather, who's
name is also William Henry Cook's mother, Alice Cook, died when he was only six years of
age; he was an only child; he didn't know much about his mom and I just wanted to
learn about her and her parents, her siblings, aunts and uncles. I guess I just simply
want to learn more about me. I feel like there's a void in my life by my not knowing more
about my family. I really do thank anyone for taking thetime out to read my query. I
hope that someone can help me. Oh, by the way I found this email address on
afrigeneas.com. I can't find any information regarding my Cook family online. I am
stumbling across other Cook families but with no connection to my Cook family. In know
that my Cook ancestors were believed to by enslaved by a Mr. Edwin Cook in Alabama.-

THOMPSON - 10/28/03
- There seems to be some confusion
concerning the Alexander Thompson line in Greene County, AL. This is a result of there
being two Alexander Thompsons in the area during the early 1800s. I earlier thought my
Alexander Thompson was married to an Elizabeth Foster and posted this on the Greene County
website, but I was incorrect. He was married to Elizabeth BROWN. They were both from South
Carolina, and were not Native Americans. I think the other Alexander Thompson was from the
Henry Butt Thompson line in Greene County, who had native American heritage. This
Alexander Thompson may have been married to an Elizabeth Foster, but I do not know.
My Alexander Thompson was born in York County, SC, about 1775, and died July 11, 1827, in
York County, SC. He is buried in SC. He was married to Elizabeth Brown, the daughter of
Colonel Joseph Brown, born March 2, 1789 in Chester County, SC, and died June 18, 1844 in
Eutaw, Greene County, AL. She is buried in the Mesopotamia Cemetery in Eutaw. Their
children were:
(1) John Brown Thompson, (1811-1861) buried Eutaw, AL
+ Mary Ann Anderson
+ Dorcas N. Means (Gordon)
(2) Joseph W. Thompson, (1812-1861) buried in MS
+ Pamela G. Meek
(3) Alexander Franklin Thompson, (1814-1819) buried in SC
(4) Foster Hockett Thompson, M.D., (1816-1850) buried in MS
+ Susan Florida Simmons (These are my great, great grandparents)
(5) Nancy Thompson, (abt. 1820-1840) buried in Eutaw, AL
(6) Sarah Harriet Thompson, (1823-1879) buried in Fayette County, TX
+ Madison Bruce Posey, M.D.
+ Alexander McDow
(7) Elizabeth Thompson, (1826-1859) buried in Fayette County, TX
+ Alexander Gates
I have been researching my family for many years and I can document all of these lines. I
have wills, court records, and other family records to verify my information on my
family.- Dorothy O'Neill Djaneo@aol.com

Help Needed - 8/03/03
- We used to live on Baker's Farm
on HWY 11, ten miles from Eutaw (toward Boligee). We lived there 5 wonderful years from
1955-60. We returned to the Eutaw area in 1967-8 and haven't been back since. Now for my
mother's 87th birthday, we are taking her back to Eutaw. We are so excited!! We would love
to be able to see the farm. Some one told us that Bear Bryant had
purchased it years ago. I don't know if this is fact and if it still belongs to his
estate. Does anyone have a way to find out how we could make contact with the owners so we
could visit. I have searched the Eutaw & Green county internet for several hours now
and this site is the only on that gives me any hope. We are visiting on Aug
16th-17th. Certainly hope someone can help or give me an email address that would
link me to someone who could help. -- Esther Kowarsch Zwemer Johnzwemer@aol.com

Will Books/ HACKLEY/ WINSETT - 8/03/03 - I need to
know if there are Will Books for the period between 1820 and 1840.
I am almost sure the person I am looking for died before 1836, and I do know he died
intestate. His name is James Hackley. According to papers I have he died
in Greene County AL, supposedly without wife and children. He would have been anywhere
between 70 and 80 years of age, if he died at that time, It is highly possible he died
before 1820, I dont know. I am actually researching the Winsett Family,
however this man ties in to this family and I really need to make sure he died in Greene
County. -- Tambra Andre ulmbrat@yahoo.com

Orange County NC Family Migration Conference - 7/04/03 - I thought the Greene Co. genealogy site might be interested in our
conference coming up in July because of the families from Orange County which went to
Alabama.
The Hillsborough Historical Society and the Orange County Historical Museum are proud
to sponsor a conference entitled, "Following Their Trail Orange County Family
Migrations." The conference takes place on July 19 and 20, 2003, in Hillsborough,
North Carolina. This two-day conference features historical lectures on the major
periods of migration in the county's history. Genealogy workshops will be offered. In
addition, there will be a guided tour of Historic Hillsborough and a hike along the great
Trading Path, which led families out of Orange County. The cost of the conference is $35

AL Death & 1866 Census Records - 7/04/03 - I
have a Web site called Alabama death records at: http://alabamadeath.tripod.com where I
provide as a service the following:
Uncertified photo copies of Alabama death certificates from 1908-1959
for $2.00
Photocopies of 1866 Alabama state census
As you know certified copies of Alabama death certificates cost $12. Many family
history researchers do not need a certified copy. For them this photocopy would be very
helpful. The 1866 Alabama State census is very helpful for someone searching for a Civil
War soldier, as in schedule one the soldiers are listed.
I am a very reliable and prompt person. I have
been doing genealogy for about 30 years now. I am married, have five grown
children, and one grandchild. At the age of 14, I learned about genealogy and how to
research from my grandmother. She was the door key keeper for the Genealogical and
Historical Society. As time passed I learned more, took college classes and did my own
research. In my twenties I began assisting others in their efforts and taught my first
genealogy class. I served in the (at that time called) Genealogy Branch Library in
Oklahoma, a couple of Family History Centers in Georgia, and now serve in the Family
History Center in Birmingham, Alabama as the staff trainer. Over the years I have assisted
more people than I can remember, and taught many, many genealogy classes at various public
libraries. The last few years I have focused a lot on teaching genealogy and the Internet
lessons. - Sincerely, Susette Cook susette_cook@hotmail.com

STOREY - 3/08/03 - My great, great, great, . . . great grandfather was a man
with last name of Storey. I have read a Storey family history, but now have misplaced it.
It's not lost, just set aside somewhere. I remember reading that Mr. Storey received a
Revolutionary War pension after moving to Greene County from near Spartanburg, South
Carolina. Your pension link reveals a Henry Story receiving a war pension in 1833 from the
Greene County Circuit Court for prior service in South Carolina. Though the site shows the
spelling to be "Story" and not "Storey", I believe it must be the same
person. My family and I are planning a trip to South Carolina this coming summer to try to
find the Storey Fort site which Mr. Storey built for Indian protection during the
Revolutionary War. We likely will take I-20 as a route. Today, looking at a map, I noted
that I-20 goes through Greene County. I would like to make a stop there and gather any
available information. I am told that Mr. Storey and his many children were founding
members, deacons and/or elders of some Presbyterian Church (probably Cumberland
Presbyterian) there in Greene County. Can anyone help me with any information as to how to
further refine my search? It may be that I could find burial sites for ancestors in a
church cemetery. Thank you in advance for any assistance that you may lend me. -- Tom

enlisted in Company C. 2nd Ala.Cavalry, in Greene County? My G-Grandfather, James S.
Poythress, enlisted there in 1862, and I am having a hard time finding any of his Civil
War Records. All I have so far, is a Muster-In card from the Alabama Dept. of Archives,
that says he enlisted in Green County, and reported to Camp Stone, on May 6, 1862. I have
found no Pay Cards, or Pension Records. If anyone has had luck finding records of this
unit, I would appreciate any advice or direction, to locating them. I would also like to
know if anyone has ever run across this surname, in any of their research, in Greene
County. After the war, he settled in or around Eutaw. Thank you, -- Elaine Denver145@aol.com

Lee and Rhodes marriage 1851 - 2/10/03
- I need help on this family,
especially the groom. Greene Co, Al marriage records show Robert Washington Lee married
Margaret Rhodes on April 05, 1851. I have some on the Rhodes line. Her father was Thomas W
Rhodes. (Some list middle initial as R) The family came from S.C. Margaret was born 1833
in Greensboro, Hale, Al. It seems most of the Rhodes stayed in either Hale or Greene
counties for some time, and many later moved on to Miss. Robert & Margaret had one
known daughter, Narcissus Verlilia 'Lily' Lee in 1872, either Greene or Hale county. The
family later moved to Miss, but I don't know when. There is a Robert Washington Lee listed
living with William Rhodes in the 1850 Perry county, Alabama census. I assume this is the
same person and William Rhodes may be Margaret's uncle.
LDS has this listing : Robert Washington Lee
Event(s) Birth 19 JAN 1823 , Alabama
Death 1881
Parents
Father JONATHAN LEE
Mother ABSEBETH
I cannot find a record for either of these people. I need any records, clues, etc, in
any time period for any of these people. I don't have access to hardly any records other
than what is on the Internet. Thanks for any help. -- Randy westxan@cox-internet.com
TRUSSELL Family - 2/10/03 -I just finished going through your web site for Green Co.
Alabama and I thought someone might like some more information on the Trussell Family and
possibly we could trade information. I have the original Diary copy of James Madison
Trussell Sr. son of James Trussell and Sarah Asher. In his diary he details some of the
locations his father settled on Warrior River, Tombigbee, and the travels of his father
and sons before settling in Green Co. Also genealogy of the family. At this time I am
doing research through the University of Texas at Arlington where James Madison Trussell's
collection is housed. Many papers in this collection with more details about lands and
people he was in association with. Estate of Mathew Trussell, details of Joseph Trussell
married to Margaret Strait widow of Cuthbert Price and how they died. Memorials of John
Trussell, Elizabeth Lyles Trussell (J.M. Trussells mother) and many more. The Finding Aid
to this collection is 102 pages long. If you are interested in some of this information
please contact me. I will be doing research on the family for some time to come. -- Dannie

ROBINSON/ HERNDON/ SHERINE/ WARD - 01/01/03 - Edwin "Bulger" Robinson, son of George Robinson and Mary M. "Polly"
Herndon, was born March 29, 1815 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. In 1772 Edwins
Great Grandfather, Michael Robinson, sold his town house in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania
County, Virginia to George Washington who used it as a residence for his elderly mother,
Martha Ball Washington. The house is now known as the Mary Washington House, an excellent
museum with a good genealogy section on the Washingtons. Edwins parents moved to
Erie, Greene County, Alabama about 1820. On October 19, 1836 while living in Greene County
Edwin married Caroline E. Sherine, who was born about 1820 in North Carolina. Edwin and
Caroline had six children, all born in Greene County, and were listed on the 1850 Greene
County Census.
Jennette E. Robinson was born September 04, 1838 and married George Henry Cox who was
also born in Greene County. They would later move to Smith County, Mississippi in the
Trenton area. Lina "Linnie" Doren Robinson was born August 09, 1842 and married
James Madison Moore, son of George W. Moore, Jr. and Louiseanna Overby, February 09, 1860
in Smith County. After James Moore died in 1881, Lina married Mr. Davis. George William
Robinson, born about 1843, married Malissa A. Crook, daughter of Lewis Edmond Crook and
Mary Elizabeth Carr, after returning from the Civil War. He had served with her brothers,
twins Benjamin Franklin Crook and Henry Wallace Crook, in Company C, 8th Regiment
Infantry, CSA. Thomas H. Robinson was born about 1847. Catherine "Kate" Robinson
was born September 27, 1850 and married Peter Granville Hord, son of Edward C. and Sarah
A. Hord. Richard Tyree Robinson, born August 06, 1853, married first to Francis
"Fannie" Winsted, daughter of Thomas W. Winstead and Barcenia Linsey. After
Fannie died Tyree married Aurelia Malinda Vinzant, daughter of William M. Vinzant and Mary
Ann Williams, on March 15, 1903.
After Caroline died Edwin married Mary Ann Elizabeth Ward, born February 04, 1829 in
Chatham County, North Carolina, in Greene County on March 13, 1858. Shortly after their
first child's birth they moved to the Trenton Burns area of Smith County, Mississippi.
They were listed in the 1860 Smith County Census.
Does anyone know who this Caroline E. Sherine's (sp ?) parents were. What about Mary
Ann Ward? Any help appreciated. -- George Stuart gwstuart@c-gate.net

BRASFIELD/ CLEMENTS/ RENCHER - 01/01/03 - - Was looking at the USIGS Military Collection Links where there's a link to a page formerly with sprynet the called "Partial list
of men who served or who claimed eligibility for a pension for Revolutionary War, War of
1812 or Indian Wars Service and who lived in and or died in Greene County, Alabama."
I have ancestors of Goss (Sherman, Jr and William S), Brasfield, Clements, and Rencher who
lived in or near Forkland. Do you still have that page online, or can you tell me if any
of these are on the list? Thank you for any help you can give. -- Cornelia Elrod elrodc@bellsouth.net
