Henry G. Jones & Sarah Kennedy his wife
C. L. Schmenk - 2007
Henry is not the son of Edmund J. and Mildred Murphy Jones (my ancestors who married Jan. 25, 1812); he is not related to James Sidney Jones, nor William Jones & Diannah Vaden whose first child is Margaret V. Jones married Archibald Gilmer;
(see Nat Jones articles on William Jones, Sr.) He is not the son of John Jones from Georgia died 1847 buried Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Cemetery. Henry G. Jones is NOT named in ANY of these men’s wills. WHO is this Henry G. Jones? Without a shred of evidence I suspect Henry G. Jones is related to my Edmund J. Jones 1782-1856 branch.
Henry G. Jones was born in North Carolina November 18, 1800 and died in Greene Co., AL March 27, 1870. Henry G. married Feb. 27, 1838 in Greene Co., Alabama, Sarah Kennedy. Sarah was born in South Carolina Mar. 4, 1811 and died in Greene Co., Alabama on July 14, 1894.
Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church held a 150 year
celebration in 1998. Both the cemetery and church are still in use
March 2006. The church is located WEST of Eutaw off Highway 14 in Pleasant Ridge.
Henry G. Jones, November 18, 1800, March 27, 1870 (relatively new stone)
Sarah, wife of H. G. Jones, born, March 4, 1811, died, July 14, 1894 (old stone)
Farewell, JONES, Thomas K. Jones, Mar. 23, 1845, Jan. 29, 1930 “An honest man is the noblest word of God.” (old stone)
Sarah and Henry G. had three children:
Martha was born 1841 in Alabama and married Isaac KIRKLAND (son of Moses B. Kirkland and Paulina Unknown – he was born 1833 & died about 1868)
Thomas K., never married, born Mississippi March 23, 1845, died at Pleasant Ridge January 29, 1930. Death Certificate for Thomas K. Jones Pleasant Ridge Greene Co, AL March 23, 1845, Jan. 29, 1930. Vol 2, roll 3, page 762; buried Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Cemetery

his first marriage. Interestingly, his children from his first
marriage name their children after people in Rebecca's family! You
will find all census entries for this Beck family in Kemper from
1840 forward.)
The BECKS are included here because I believe Rebecca to be Henry
G. Jones' sister and Martha his mother. Further, Abner Beck went to
Dekalb, Kemper Co, MS from Perry Co., AL which is just south of
Greene Co. And, I believe the Beck's were related or friends of the
Greene County Jones'.

above.) Appears he died around 1868, and the Snedecor Map 1868 has
an entry close to Sarah Jones/Martha Scott "Philomon Kirkland
ESTATE". Martha struck through some of the estate documents of
her father, 1870, and wrote Martha SCOTT on them; she signed as
Martha SCOTT. In 1880 she is listed as Martha Kirkland, widow.
However, I suspect her mother gave the census data. There appears to
be a utter disregard by her parents to recognize her new last name
of SCOTT.

EARLY-MID 1870 yellow fever in Greene County
1. Henry G. died March 1870, not unreasonable, age 68
2. Isaac Kirkland (probable husband of Martha) is gone by census 1870; probable death about 1868 or 1869 based on birth of their last child Mary.
3. Martha SCOTT age 30 1870 census with Mom. 1880 census still with mother Sarah Jones & lists self as widow age 39
4. Martha's daughter Mary age 1 on the 1870 census - she doesn't MAKE the 1880 census.
5. William E. Jones died 1871 (1870 census as Henry G. Jones’ overseer); son of Edmund and Mildred Murphy Jones. My line.
MARY ELLEN POYNER JAMES – ONLINE POSTING at genforum.genealogy.com:
I am from Greene Co. AL originally and my grandmother was Mary Eleanor Jones Poynor, Her father was Henry G. Jones. He had a plantation at Pleasant Ridge and his parents were Edmund Jones and Martha ---. I wonder if there is a connection. My grandmother was born in DeKalb, Kemper Co Mississippi and they moved to Greene Co when she was two or three years old. The Joneses attended Sardis Methodist church in West Greene. My grandmothers mother was a Kennedy and they were staunch Presbyterians and attended the Presbyterian church in Pleasant Ridge. Henry G and Sarah are buried in that cemetery. Do you know Mildred or Millies maiden name? I do not know Martha's but had found a Martha Batte who married an Edmund Jones in 1793 in Greensville, Va. If you would like to respond by e-mail I would welcome it at poynorj@aol.com [email does not work March 2005] http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-genforum/messagehistory.cgi?338076234
Henry G. with old Martha:
1. Henry born NC next to Martha Jones age 68 born NC; 1850 Kemper Co. MS census
2. Henry next to Martha Jones age 85, 1860 Greene Co., Alabama
3. Martha Jones dies 1867 and is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery next to William E. Jones, son of Edmund & Mildred Murphy Jones, who was overseer on Henry G. Jones’ farm.
4. Martha Jones marker died 1867 aged 100 making her birth year be 1767.
5. There are LOTS of twins in the Edmund Jones / Mildred Murphy clan. Speculation that Henry G. Jones could have been a twin to Rebecca Beck (1850 census) both age 49. Rebecca is sandwiched between Henry and Martha.
6. Edmund J. Jones (wife Mildred Murphy) born 1782 NC is possibly a child of Martha Jones.
7. No confirmation of “Edmund” Jones born ca 1867 married to “Martha” except for Mary Ellen Poyner James stating that Henry’s parents were Edmund and Martha Jones. Mary Ellen Poyner James states her great grandparents are Henry G. Jones and Sarah Kennedy Jones.
8. MARTHA could be a second wife of Edmund Jones, which would explain why the Edmund-> Alfred branch NOT naming children “Martha” and the Henry G. branch did.
9. Martha being buried next to William E. Jones, son of Edmund and Mildred Murphy Jones, indicates some relationship between the two. It was most likely Elvira Hicks Jones, William E. Jones’ wife, who buried them side-by-side in the Hicks plot at Ebenezer Cemetery, which is in close proximity to Henry G. Jones’ land.
Henry's old Martha with the HICKS clan
TILMON HICKS + Martha Jones, possible daughter or daughter-in-law of Mrs. Martha Jones in same household. Tilmon Hick’s daughter Elvira W. married first William E. Jones and second Alonzo Bradner per probate documents Jan. 14, 1884 for her father. She resided in Perry County , AL 1884 and is NOT buried at Ebenezer. All three: Martha Jones Hicks (died 1860 age 60), Mrs. Martha Jones (died 1867 aged 100), and William E. Jones (died 1871 age 51) are buried at Ebenezer with Tilmon’s son William P. Hicks (died 1858 age 24), daughter Isabelle Hicks (died 1852 age 11), daughter Drucilla Hicks Edwards died in childbirth August 27, 1866 age 18. One twin “infant” is buried with Drucilla, the other twin Kathyrn Drucilla (Kitty) lived. Husband/father is John E. Edwards son of Henry (Buck) Edwards and Mariah Horton (my Horton line.)
Per probate document for Jan 14, 1884 for Tilman Hicks the guardian of Drucilla Hicks Edward’s child Kathyrn Drucilla Edwards was Candice M Baines/Barnes. [Candice Mariah Edwards-Cockrell-Barnes-Jones is sister of John E. Edwards.] Candice never had children of her own.
