John A. Jones 1853-1918

My great great grandpaw - C. L. Schmenk

John Alfred Jones was born July 27, 1853 in Greene County, Alabama to Alford Edward Jones and Harriet Baines Strickland (see separate article on Elizabeth Baines, mother of Harriet.)

The picture of John was taken after 1886 – next to him (but not shown) is his father with third wife Kitty Colvin, they married November 1886.

His first marriage was December 14, 1876 [Green Co. Marriage book, Index 57-b Selecia E. Crump to John A. Jones 1876, book F-1 page 130.] John and Ellen were married at their parents’ house, where John’s father became his father-in-law and Jane’s mother became her mother-in-law…

Ellen’s mother Jane married John’s father Alfred on December 17, 1872. Ellen was the daughter of Richard D. Crump and Margaret Jane Jones Crump Hurst JONES.  Richard died in the Civil War. Jane and Richard were from St. Clair County, Alabama, and their three children were born there.

It is believed that Richard and Jane relocated to Greene County prior to the civil war but after the 1860 St. Clair census. Further, it appears Jane returned to St. Clair County after her husband’s death, where she married a second time to Billington Sanders Hurst. After Billington’s death, it appears, Alford raced up to St. Clair County and married Jane in that county.

The Greene county 1880 census has Jane, her son George, and her daughter Susmira in the household. Susmira would marry James Webster Jones (James Washington Jones on the wedding certificate), another of Alfred and Harriet’s sons. George would marry a local Greene County girl, Nancy M. Hamilton, but they would move shortly after their marriage to St. Clair County and remain in that county until their deaths and burial at the Steele Cemetery in St. Clair Co.

In every census John shows his occupation as farmer. Census entries for John:

Census 1860, Jefferson Co., Arkansas, age 7 with parents.
Census 1870, Greene Co., AL, age 17 with parents.
Census 1880, Pleasant Ridge, Greene Co., AL, Age 26, Head, with Ellen.
Census 1900, Greene Co., AL Clinton Beat 7, age 36, 26B with Kate.
Census 1910, Greene Co., AL, Page 1A, lines 13-21 house 3 family 3

The 1910 census is interesting. It shows Kate is 10 years older than John, and gives a clue about the difficulties in his sister Sallie’s household:

John A. Jones 56
Kate Jones 66
Newton C. Jones 20 (Christopher Newton Jones)
Gilmer, Velma 13 (ancestry.com shows her as Gilma Jelina Gilmer)
Bessie Gilmer 11
Sallie Gilmer 9
James Gilmer 6
Henderson Rogers 47
Clarence 40
James C. Gilmer is on the 1910 Greene County census but dies shortly after that census. He is buried with Sallie at Pleasant Hill, and with his first wife and several of his children. (See separate article on James C. Gilmer, Sr., 1851-1910,  husband of John’s sister Sallie 1872-1904.)

Census entries for Ellen Crump:

Census 1860, St. Clair Co., AL, age 2
Census 1880, Greene Co., AL, age 23
Death 1893, Greene Co., AL, buried at Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Greene Co., AL (with husband John A. Jones.)

John’s second marriage was June 13, 1894 in Greene Co., Alabama to Josephine Catherine (Kate) Eatman, who married her first cousin Madison M. Eatman (no children) and second to John A. Jones. See separate article on Kate Eatman, daughter of Elijah and Adaline (Ada) Eatman. Kate died January 01, 1926, in Reform, Pickens County, Alabama with burial at Bethel Church Cemetery (per death certificate, be we could not find her grave when we visited that cemetery in 2003.)

Copy of marriage certificate on file to John A Jones -- married at the residence of Mr. James Gilmore (see separate article on James C. Gilmore, Sr.)  Kate is shown on the marriage certificate as Mrs. Kate Eatman. Kate and Madison Eatman had no children. Copy of death certificate on file -- mother shown as Ada Eatman, father shown as unknown. He was, in fact Elijah Eatman, brother of Henry T. Eatman.

Census entries for Kate (born about 1844 in Carrollton, Pickens County, Alabama:

Census 1850, Greene Co., AL, age 6
Census 1860, Pickens Co., AL age 15
Census 1870, Clinton, Greene Co., AL, age 25
Census 1880, Clinton, Greene Co., AL, age 37 with Madison Eatman
Census 1900, Greene Co., AL Clinton Beat 7, 46, 26B with John Jones
Census 1910, Greene Co., AL, Page 1A, lines 13-21 house 3 family 3, age 66 with John Jones

John died in Greene County, Alabama, death certificate #9 Roll #1 Page #31, shows he died at 60 years, 7 months and 5 days on March 8, 1918. This equals a birth year of 1857 and conflicts with gravestone (1853-1918) and census entries (1860 age 7, 1870 age 17, etc…) John died in Lewiston and was buried alongside his first wife Selecia Ellen Crump Jones at Pleasant Hill. They are buried in close proximity to one of Uncle Leonard’s wives, Leonard’s son John Thomas Jones, the Gilmer group, John’s sister Sallie, their daughter Lillie, etc… Most of the Jones’ buried at Pleasant Hill are related. Except for that Woodson C. Jones group – which I have tried for years to link to our Edmund J. Jones group, without success…

The picture is of Lillie, Clarence and their four sons: Newton Earl King (Earl), Joseph Howard King (Howard), Robert Hanson King (my grandfather – the one holding his ears) and Clarence Earl King, Jr. (the baby.) The two middle sons, Howard and Robert, looked like their Jones clan. It is this clan that purports to have a “Crump” grandmother who is full-blood Cherokee. They certainly looked Indian – but so far I have not been able to FIND that Crump Cherokee Grandmother!

Clarence Earl King, Sr., on left, and Lillie Hanson Jones King, on right

In a letter to me dated 11-23-1982, my grandfather Robert Hanson King mentions "youngest sister to Lillie Hanson is Maudine Parks and Velma Holroyd is Lillie's double first cousin."  Eleanor King Russo, descending from one of Clarence’s sons, wrote to me 2001 and said Lillie was 1/4 Indian. Since Robert specifically said “Grandmother Crump” that leaves us with only Jane Jones as our Cherokee Indian Grandmother. In 30 years we now have a total of ZERO proof that Jane was Indian. Jane’s father was  Marshall Spears Jones – not a very Indian-like name…  it is possible that Marshall’s wife, Elizabeth Hill, was the Indian.

Jane was born 1834 and this was not a time to blabber about being native American. The rule was that if you were married to a native American then they were not relocated away from you to the west.

I recall seeing the picture of our “Indian Grandmother” and I didn’t think she looked as much Indian as my grandfather did! That picture has been lost to us since my grandfather’s death.

VELMA Holroyd, mentioned in Robert’s letter, has been traced back as the first child of James C. Gilmer, Sr., and Sallie F. Jones, his wife. I have found her on the 1930 census in

Obituary from The Greensboro Watchman, Vol. 76, No. 9, Greensboro, Alabama, Thursday, July 3, 1952

Clarence E. King Dies Suddenly At His Home
Clarence Earl King, 69, a prominent citizen, died suddenly at his home here last Sunday night, June 29. He had not been in good health in recent months, but his death was entirely unexpected and it came as a shock to his friends throughout this part of the state.

Mr. King was owner and operator of the King Body Shop in Greensboro, a business devoted to auto body repair, machine work, trailer manufacturing and the like.

Born at Pleasant Ridge, in Greene County, on July 31, 1888, Mr. King was reared in that community. In 1906, he married Miss Lillie H Jones, and they had four sons, Earl, Howard, Robert and Clarence, Jr.

In that same year, 1906, Mr. King moved to Birmingham and was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church there for many years, serving both as deacon and elder. He was in the automobile business in Birmingham and in 1939 he moved to Greensboro to become shop foreman for the Shine Chevrolet Company. He held this position for seven years, and then opened his own auto body shop here in 1947. He operated this company until his death.

Mr. King was active in the Greensboro Presbyterian Church, and served as an elder for several years. He was a Mason for more than 30 years and a member of Greensboro Lodge.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church here at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. The Rev. F. E. Jordan, pastor, conducted the services and he was assisted by the Rev. James Cantrell, Birmingham Presbyterian minister. Burial was in Greene County, with the Masons in charge of the graveside services. As a boy, Mr. King attended the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church. The pall bearers were Coates Dismukes, C. D. Cothran, Jr., Scott Hardenbergh, M. R. Whitely, Elisha Muckle and Stewart Bryant. Officers of the local Presbyterian Church were honorary pall bearers.

Surviving Mr. King are his widow, Mrs. Lillie H. King, four sons, Earl King of Detroit; Howard King of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Robert King of Birmingham and Clarence King, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale. One brother, Joseph H. King of Birmingham, one sister, Mrs. Onie Leath of Gadsden, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Lillie and Clarence’s children were Newton Earl (Earl) born July 21, 1907 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, Joseph Howard (Howard) born December 14, 1909 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, Robert Hanson born July 9, 1912 in Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama, and Clarence Earl, Jr. born August 10, 1917 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama.

The "Hanson" family name continues to this day. It took some doing but the family rumor was "a teacher in the area." The day I decided that the "teacher" could be a female was the day I found Lilly Georgia Hanson. Of course, a great deal of LUCK was with me since this is the only census she appears alone, in Greene County, as a teacher. On the next census she has married Marcellus Hales and has children of her own. Lilly's family was loaded with teachers! You will find Lilly's family on early 1800 censuses in the Pickens area, under John Wesley Hanson, Sr.

Child born June 9, 1889, Christopher Newton Jones married first to (we think!) Lucy Fason, and second to (we know) Elizabeth Bowman (we have imputed her maiden name based on the 1910 census, so her maiden name may be incorrect.)

Marriages

1913 in Greene County, AL C. Newton Jones & wife Lucy, convey land to William H. King; 1856 where MOLSEY KING, wife of Littleberry King and daughter of Sarah Chamblee Horton and Jesse Horton, lives on that land: T24 R1E sec 36, 260 acres. There is a Greene County marriage record for Newton Jones to Lucy Fason. It is from this probate record that we surmise a wife before Elizabeth Bowman.

By the 1920 census Newton is showing a wife named Elizabeth F. (Lizzie) and brother-in-law Fred Bowman.  She was born about 1895 in Alabama according to the census entry, and they have one son age 3 (John F. Jones.)

I “assigned” without confirmation a maiden name of  Bowman to Lizzie based on the “brother-in-law” entry on the 1920 census.

Alabama death record Fred Bowman, Jr. died November 18, 1946 Jefferson County, age 41 #20466 4
