Josephine Catherine eatman eatman jones 1844 - unk.

C. L. Schmenk

Kate was born about 1844 and her second marriage was to my great-great grandfather John A. Jones. I hope to find her (eventually) buried next to her first husband Madison M. Eatman. Kate raised John and Ellen Jones’ six children, one was my great grandmother Lillie Hanson Jones King.

She was the daughter of Elijah Eatman born NC 1822 and Adia born NC 1822 (obtained from censuses.) Elijah and Adia Eatman’s other children  were: Oliver C. 1849, Sarah 1851, William 1854, Andrew Jackson 1856, Mary 1859, and Rich born 1862. There may have been more – there are a lot of unmarked stones in their row at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greene County.

You’ll find Kate age 6 on the 1850 census with her parents and brother in Clinton. Her father died May of 1860 of consumption (1860 Fed. Mortality schedule on Ancestry.com.) The 1860 census has Kate and her family in Carrollton, Pickens County. In 1870 Kate's family is joined by her cousin Madison Eatman. Madison may have come to help his recently widowed Aunt or he and Kate had already been married by then.

Madison M. Eatman born 1834 was the son of Mourning Pridgen and Henry T. Eatman. He was a private in the 36th ALA inf. Co. B. (with a bunch of the local boys); and in the Greene County Home Guard (Muster in Roll of Capt Cockrell dated 1864/08/19.) A second record shows him in the Greene County Local, 2nd Class Militia. There are quite a few in Kate and Madison’s line that served in the war, including (but NOT limited to): Thomas Eatman, a private in the Home Guard Greene County Militia, in Captain Tyree’s Company, service record shows his age as 54, living in Spring Field, Greene County, a farmer. It shows he owns his own gun (Roll dated Knox Store 1864/11/05.) William T. Eatman was a private in the Home Guard Reserves, (Hospital Register #5133. Complaint, constipation. Date admitted: 1864/08/06. Date returned to duty 1864/08/09 Authority: Hospital Register of General Hospital, Selma, Alabama preserved in AL State Dept of Archives History). It appears he also served in the West Greene Home Guard Volunteers.

By 1880 Kate and Madison are in Mantua, Greene County where he states his age is 46, he’s a farmer, was born in Alabama and both his parents were born in NC. Catherine is shown as his wife, age 37, born in Alabama, and both her parents were also born in NC. Living with them is Kate’s younger sister Mary A., age 19, born in Alabama.

Madison and Kate never had children. Nor did she have children with her second husband John A. Jones. Kate married John on June 14, 1894 at the residence of James Gilmore. James married John’s younger sister Sally. Most commonly their surname is spelled Gilmer, but the marriage record shows “Gilmore.”  (See separate article on James C. Gilmore, Sr.)

The first wedding of James C. Gilmer was to Molly A. Garrett on December 08, 1886 was solemnized at the residence of M. A. Eatman (Mourning) on December 09, 1886 by Eld. N. B. Jones (Needham Bryant Jones).  Mary (nickname Molly) A. Gilmer died young and is buried at Pleasant Hill. None of her babies survived, they are also buried with her at Pleasant Hill along with James, Sally Jones Gilmer, his second wife, and some of their children. Smack in the middle of the Gilmers is an Eatman infant.

The Gilmers, Eatmans and Joneses shared many births, deaths, marriages and probate documents…

Almost the entire 1890 census was burned in a fire. A very few fragments were saved, but nothing remains for Alabama.

On the 1900 June 5th census in Greene County Kate states her age as 56 and John A. Jones age 46. It shows they have been married 7 years (based on their marriage certificate it is six years and 1 day.)

The 1910 census for Kate and John:

John age 56 married 15 years
Kate age 66 mother of zero children
Newton Jones age 20
Gilma Jelina Gilmer 13 (this is Velma V. Gilmer)
Bessie Gilmer 11
Sallie Gilmer 9
James Gilmer 6
Kenderson Rogers 47
Clerance Rogers 40
These Gilmers are the children of John’s sister Sallie and her husband James C. Gilmer.

Their father JAMES is also on the 1910 census, Clinton, Greene County:
James C. Gilmore age 54 widowed, born AL, living alone
He died the same year and was buried at Pleasant Hill.

John died 1918 and is buried with his first wife Ellen Crump Jones at Pleasant Hill.

I could not find Kate on the 1920 census and I do not know where Kate is buried.

Henry: born Nash Co. NC April 16, 1809 died Sept. 7, 1859 aged 50 years 4 months and 21 days. Pleasant Hill.

April 12, 1856 Henry wrote a will. Item five is as follows:

My daughter Mary H has left my home clandestinely and is supposed to be married to one A S Seymore. She has disregarded my wishes, which were for her own good. She has chosen her lot & she must abide by it. I desire that my Executor out of any monies that may come to hand to pay to said Mary H. the sum of one dollar, which is to be understood as her full share of my Estate under this will –

Henry’s will is in the Documents-Will and Estate Documents section.  In his blue file at the Greene County courthouse is additional information about Polly’s infraction – I believe she and A. S. Seymore contested the will. Interestingly, Polly is back in her mother’s household by 1870. When the will was read Polly was “of age.”  But in 1856 when she infuriated her father she was 15-16 years old.

Many Eatmans mentioned in this article are buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. It is fully transcribed and available in the Cemetery area. Also available, is the Eatman Cemetery in Mantua. That cemetery is in the middle of a field on the Middleton property. 2006 we battled our way through the brush to find one single burial that we could read. I believe this cemetery CAN be restored and the other graves uncovered.  There is another Eatman Cemetery on this website, but we have not yet found its actual location in Greene County. CLS-2007
