I have worked on the Thompson and Ragland families genealogy since I was
about 9 years old and since I married when I was 17 I feel like they are
really mine and often refer to them that way. Also, my Ragland aunt
married Bud's Peebles uncle in the early 1700's in Charles City,
Virginia. In any event, I have been working on the Peoples family for
about 15 years. During that time I have also had an active practice so
often there have been large blocks of time when I didn't work on my gen
research at all. I have accumulated so much information that we
commited to ourselves to finish organizing the bulk of info and publish
next year. In the process of working with our St Clair family I ended up
in many other counties and kept picking up cousins so decided to put
together what I had found throughout Alabama. I have found two Lemuels.
One was Buds's gg uncle and one is his cousin (your Lemuel) through
William Peebles II and - Hamlin. So far all Peebles,Peeples and Peoples
in Alabama up through 1860 are descended from Capt David.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Lynn

ARAH PEEBLES II:The Peebles/Peeples connection with the Horton is old and complex.
Amos I married Sarah Peebles, daughter of William Peeples about 1734.
Amos II married Virginia Peebles, daughter of John Peebles II in March
of 1767.
Amos II's daughter, Lavinia married John Peebles III and moved from
North Carolina to Green County, AL, locating within 10 miles of her
brother, Jesse Horton and her sister, Sarah Horton Scarborough.
The Peebles and Hortons from Pickens and Greene Counties are still
acquainted and Betty Peebles King, 2201 Mellon Lane, Oxford, Alabama
36203 has a wealth of information on the Peebles going back to their
roots in Scotland. Betty is a very nice and helpful person and would be
happy to hear from anyone tracing her line. She is not on the internet.

Surry County 100 acres Patent
2) Amos Horton 10Sept 1755 Card 1
Brunswick County 400 acres Patent
A digitalized copy of the actual patent/grant record can be downloaded and
save to file. You can also right click and copy the index card which
contains a typed description with more detail than I put above.
Go to the URL, scroll down to Land Records, hit GO. When page loads, scroll
and choose first Land Records link (not the Northern Neck one). When page
loads, scroll down to the Horton name (it has its own separate entry). Click
on it, it may take a few seconds to load as it is bringing up the digitalized
card. When loaded, you will see the button to Retrieve document. Click it -
you then have a choice of opening it to the screen or save to hard drive.
I usually save to hard drive in a special folder, open in PhotoHouse, clean
up the black smutz, print a copy for my book files and save image to a floppy
and delete 1st copy from my hard drive. It makes for some very impressive
family books. Found 17 patent/grant records for my Webbs in Cabell and
Putnam Co, VA (now WVA).

John Peebles, 3rd, youngest son of John 2nd, according to tradition, married three times. The name of his first wife is not known and little information regarding any children from this marriage, if there were any.
In 1780 John married Winifred Robertson (1755-ante Nov., 1808), daughter of John and Ann Robertson of Wake County, North Carolina. John Robertson's will gives the names of Winifred's six children:
Rebecca - b. ante 1790; m. May 4, 1807 to Samuel Harris--children- Louise, Howlin and Harrison.
Sarah - m. October 28, 1807 to Theophilus Dean.
Charlotte (Lotta) - b. post 1790; m. March 14, 1818 to Henry Lassiter, children-

His grave is unmarked, but according to tradition is also buried in Mitchell.]
John Peebles (3rd) married next ante 1805 to Lavinia Viney Horton (1781--ante 1860). John Peebles' will was probated in 1825. To this union were born nine children:

Hi Scott,
Please forgive my disappearance! Grandmother, with whom I share a house, has been a bit "under the weather" lately, and has required several trips to the doctor in Tuscaloosa.
I leave next week for an English conference in St. Louis, where I am to read a paper. I have been spending spare time brushing up the paper, and re-reading source material...with the hope of being able to dodge any questions about my research!
Let me supply some information here:
John Peebles, IV was the first Peebles to purchase land and live in Pickens County. He and his wife, Elizabeth Orren King Peebles, were both born in Wake County, NC. John is believed to have been born in 1796, son of John and Winifred Robertson Peebles. The area in North Carolina from which John came is north of Raleigh near the Neuse River; the landscape is not unlike the area in southeast Pickens County near the Sipsey River where the family settled in the early 1830s.
Elizabeth Orren King is believed to have been born in Orange County, NC.
The couple had five children, all born in Wake County, NC.
The first land John Peebles purchased, according to federal land grant records, was made on December 18, 1832. Other land purchases were made on November 13, 1833, June 25, 1834, and December 13, 1836.
Elizabeth Orren King Peebles died in 1835, according to sketchy family records, and is thought be buried in the Mitchell Cemtery in Benevola (Pickens County). No death date in known for John Peebles, but he is not listed on the 1850 census. No grave in Mitchell Cemtery is marked for John, but the late Emory Peebles Hildreth, John's great-granddaughter, always maintained that he was buried there. With the exception of William Battle Peebles, who is buried in Old Bethany Cemetery near Vienna, all of the couple's other children are also buried in Mitchell Cemetery.
The couple's children were:
1. Orren Robert (b. Jan. 1, 1821, m. Mary Anne Lucius; d. December 15, 1887)
2. John Vester (b. May 13, 1822; m. (1) Mary C. Woolfolk, (2) Louise Hood;
d. Jan. 14, 1871)
3. William Battle (b. March 19, 1824; m. (1) Elizabeth Jane Harris*, (2) Bettie Cox;
d. Aug. 31, 1884)
4. Hawkins (b. Aug. 22, 1828; m. J. William Curry; d. July 21, 1912)
5. Elizabeth Cornelia ("Neely") (b. May 10, 1830; m. David G. Hood; d. July 13,
1920)
*Grandmother, Betty Peebles King, has extensive records on the Harris family, many of whom lived at Vienna.
William Battle Peebles, born in Wake County, NC on March 19, 1824), was poorly educated (only attended school for twelve months) but highly industrious, with "energy and hands willing to work" (Emory Peebles Hildreth). He eventually became a successful merchant in Vienna. (We have newspaper accounts of his success as a merchant.)
As a teenager, William Battle cut saw logs at Fench's Ferry (on the Warrior River); then learned the blacksmith trade, which he practiced for several years; then he learned the daguerrotype business. Later he worked in Arkansas for six months, and then returned to Alabama to be employed as an overseer for James Carpenter of Greene County. At age twenty, he entered the merchantile business in Vienna, and remained in that business until his death forty years later.
On April 13, 1859, when he was thirty-five years old and established in business, he married Elizabeth Jane Harris, daughter of Owen Slaughter Harris and the former Polly B. Ricks. Elizabeth Jane Harris was born on October 22, 1837.
On April 6, 1860, the couple's first child, Emory Battle Peebles, was born in Vienna. Two years later (April 11, 1862), a daughter, Mary Ella, was born.
In the fall of 1862, William Battle Peebles joined the Confederate Army and was a member of Captain Hugh Summerville's Company G, 40th Alabama Regiment. Very little information has been located about his service in the Confederate Army, but upon his discharge at Demopolis, he returned to his family and business.
On January 18, 1865, third child, William Barnabas Peebles, who with his brother, Emory Battle, who eventually succeed their father in the merchantile business, was born. Two stillborn births followed in 1867 and 1869, respectively.
In 1871, nine year old Mary Ella died, most like of diptheria (sp?).
On April 6, 1874, Emory Battle's birthday, Elizabeth Jane Harris Peebles died.
In 1883, William Battle Peebles married Bettie Cox, who was born in Birmingham.
William Battle died on August 31, 1884 and is buried in the family plot at Old Bethany Cemetery, where now rest the remains of his entire family.
William Battle's obituary states that he "was in many respects a remarkable man: his friendships strong, his memory tenacious, his judgment good, influenced by a determined will. He was keenly alive to his duties as a citizen....a congenial friend, a kind husband and father."
William Barnabas Peebles, born in Vienna on January 16, 1865, grew up at his father's knee in the merchantile business, and with brother Emory Battle eventually inherited the reportedly successful business.
Both Emory Battle and William Barnabas attended Howard College at Marion, Alabama. William Barnabas completed his work there in 1884, the same year as his father's death. According to Howard College records, he took a variety of courses, including English, French, Latin, chemistry, mathematics and political economy. He was also a member of the social fraternity, Sigma Chi, which according to family lore was his chief interest in college.
On January 15, 1885, he married Bettie Green Darrow, orphaned daughter of William M. and Ophelia Franklin Wilder Darrow. Bettie Green Darrow was born on November 12, 1867.
The union resulted in six children, three of whom lived to adulthood. Sons William Battle (born July 31, 1887), Emory Bush (born April 18, 1889), and Frank Darrow (born July 4, 1892) spent their childhoods living in both Vienna and Columbus, Mississippi, where the family maintained a second home and where the children were educated at the Franklin Academy (which in 1997 still existed, though early records are poor and incomplete).
On February 22, 1904, after a brief illness, Bettie Green Darrow died at the family's Columbus residence. She was buried at Old Bethany Cemetery, Vienna, Alabama.
William Barnabas later married a distant cousin, Annie Laurie Curry, daughter of W. V. Curry.
William Barnabas, according to his obituary, was a "farmer, merchant and financier of notable achievement." He not only ran the merchantile business, but also commissioned the construction of and owned a steamboat, appropriately named "Vienna." He was an active observer of politics and also active as a citizen, supplying the Vienna community with a one-room schoolhouse, Cedar Grove Academy.
His sons, William Battle, Emory Bush and Frank Darrow, were educated at the Marion Military Institute, where each lettered in baseball and football. Emory Bush and Frank Darrow continued their educations at the University of Alabama. Emory Bush lettered and served as quarterback in football, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and earned a degree in 1910. Frank Darrow lettered in baseball, was also an SAE, served on the student government association, and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1913. Emory Bush and Frank Darrow pursued business careers in Mobile and Decatur, Alabama, respectively. After the three brothers sold the land they inherited in Vienna (10,500 acres), William Battle was the only one to remain in Pickens County. He was an Aliceville farmer until his death in 1963.
William Barnabas Peebles died on January 22, 1915 of what was described in the newspaper as an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound suffered while he was attemtping to cross a fence at his Vienna plantation. There is some family speculation that his death was not accidental. He was buried in the family plot at Old Bethany Cemetery in Vienna.
(NOTE: I have extensive information on Emory Battle and William Barnabas Peebles, their children, grandchildren, etc. My great-grandfather was William Battle (II). I will be happy to fill in this material and send copies of photographs in the (hopefully!) near future. I have recently acquired a number of photographs from a Marion Military Institute yearbook and from the archives of the University of Alabama of William Battle (II), Emory Bush and Frank Darrow.
By the way, the steamboat "Vienna" sunk in the Tombigbee River in the early 1900s, but has been located and raised. A gentleman in Columbus was responsible for it being raised and is donated what is left of the boat to the Aliceville Museum. I recently saw an unorganized bundle of lumber and a fire box from the boat, already on display at the museum. I have one photograph of it. Will Peebles has another photo (better than the one I have) and my cousin, E. B. Peebles, Jr. of Mobile has a painting of the Vienna, which he had done from photographs. I hope to acquire a photograph of the painting in the near future. I haven't seen the painting, but understand that it is quite good.
Sorry to load you down with all of this, but thought you might be interested in having all of this. Please feel free to offer amendments, corrections, etc. to whatever you feel might be in error. Most of what is here is what I wrote for the recently published HISTORY OF PICKENS COUNTY.
One major source was my cousin, the late Mrs. Emory Peebles Hildreth, daughter of Emory Battle and great-aunt of Ted Sisty (who has most of Em's papers and has loaned me several documents), who lived in Eutaw. She was a treasure, and I am glad to have a number of her papers. By chance, did you know her? She, in her own right, was an interesting person. In the early 1920s, she served as a Presbyterian missionary in Breathitt County, Kentucky, where she taught for two years at the Highland School. Before she had to move into a nursing home in Spanish Fort, she was working on an autobiography detailing these years in southwest Kentucky. She fortunately turned over her incomplete and sketchy manuscript to a friend in Eutaw, Jananne Wilson, who has written an interesting biography. Mrs. Wilson is revising her manuscript of several hundred pages and is in search of a publisher. I have enjoyed getting to know Mrs.Wilson and helping fill her in some of the family data about Em.
Well, enough of this....take care and let me hear from you when you have the time.
Thanks again for all the information you forwarded to me. I look forward to communicating with you further.

Notes for JESSE HORTON II:
In 1800, the Jesse Horton household in Wake County, NC, consisted of Jesse, Sarah, Jane Emeline, and a young gentleman 16-26 years old, possibly one of Jesse's or Sarah's brothers. At this time Jesse owned no slaves. This same year Jesse served as the administrator of the estate of Isaac Chamblee his father-in-law, who died intestate that year. Jesse received 36 acres "in right of his wife."
In 1816 Jesse Horton was taxed for 259 3/4 acres (probably someone else's) plus 919 acres. In 1817 and 1818 he was taxed for only the 919 acres. In 1819 his taxable acreage was 1,161, as it was in 1820, plus 4 slaves.
In 1821 Jesse was taxed for 1,331 acres and 5 slaves. During this year Jesse served as executor of the estate of his deceased father Amos Horton (Jr.). According to the will of Amos Horton, written March 28, 1821 and was probated August 18 of that year. Jesse received "all my lands on the north side of the Road, by his paying Drury Horton $50, and also two negros Barn and Eady." This will, of which Jesse was executor, was probated in August 1822. In 1822 Jesse was not listed in the tax lists, having moved to Alabama, but in 1823-25 his brother Hartwell was taxed "for Jesse Horton" several hundred acres of land. Jesse had taken his slaves to Alabama. According to family sources, Jesse moved his family to Blount County, Alabama, in 1822. His youngest daughter, Eliza, was born in 1823 there in Blount County. Other Hortons settled in Blount County and Jesse may have simply stayed there until Sarah delivered and was able to travel to move on to Greene County.
In 1824 the Jesse Horton family, including 8 slaves, moved to Greene County, Alabama, settling in the vicinity of Pleasant Ridge in the northeastern corner of the county. Jesse appeared on the tax lists of Wake County, North Carolina, until 1822 when he possibly moved to Blount County, Alabama. In late 1825 Jesse travelled back to Wake County to sell the remainder of his land and settle his affairs in that state, concluding two land sales in January 1826.
The 1830 Census of Greene County, Alabama, lists Jesse Horton with three sons (Jesse Habbord, 11, William, 18, and John D., 16) and three daughters (Elizabeth M., Mariah, and MaryAnn Rebecca) with his wife Sarah. Jesse owned 19 slaves at this time.
On December 1, 1830, Jesse acquired 79.87 acres of land in Pleasant Ridge through the Tuscaloosa Land Office. Jesse purchased 320 acres from David Scott and Edward Sims on August 4, 1831 for $1600. On January 10, 1832, he acquired 158.67 more acres nearby. Jesse gained 40.03 acres through the Tuscaloosa Office on March 30, 1837. Later that year, on August 18, Jesse purchased 235 acres from Albert, Hamilton, Mary, and Sarah McGowen for $2000.
In 1840 the Jesse Horton household consisted of Jesse, Sarah, William and his wife Marcia, and a boy 5-10 years old, possibly George Washington Horton, son of Elizabeth and John Henry. Jesse owned 23 slaves this year. On March 2 of this year Jesse purchased land from his son-in-law George W. Rives, husband of daughter Candice.
On April 21, 1841 Jesse purchased 285 acres from the Achilles Edwards' estate for $1650. In June of 1847 Jesse conveyed through "natural love and affection" 240 acres along with three Negro slaves: Abe, 24, Harriet, 20, and Esther, 14 to his daughter Candice, wife of George W. Rives. These were put in a trust, with son John D. as trustee, for the life of Candice. The proceeds of these properties were to be conveyed to Candice or her heirs. Apparently about this time George and Candice moved to Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, and Jesse felt some need to provide for her.
By 1850, all the children were gone, and Jesse and Sarah lived on their plantation with 25 slaves, 13 of whom were of age to be field hands. In the 1850 U.S. Census Agricultural Returns, Jesse Horton is shown with the following, the yearly production for 1849:
Land: 300 acres improved, 360 ac. unumproved, total value $7,980.00. (tot.660a)
Equiptment: $315;
Livestock: 5 horses, 3 mules, 11 milk cows, 4 oxen, 26 other cattle, 35 sheep,
95 swine, total livestock value: $1.120.00
Produce: 2,000 bu corn, 511 bu oats, 18 bales cotton, 50 lb wool, 50 bu peas,
10 bu potatoes, 350 bu yams (sweet potatoes), 150 lb butter, 200 lb

John Peebles (3rd) married next ante 1805 to Lavinia Viney Horton (1781--ante 1860). John Peebles' will was probated in 1825. To this union were born nine children:

"THE DANIEL HORTON FAMILY
Daniel Horton, b. abt 1775;d. abt Jan. 1854; Will probated Mar. 1854; he m. abt 1798, Nidsey ........, b. abt 1778. They were among the well-to-do earliest pioneer settlers, settling on lots no. 159-160 in 23rd district north of Louvale, and he also owned at his death, lot no. 160 in the 33rd district, all the land was adjoining. Daniel Horton owned three slaves in 1850 census. In his will he names Jesse and Wiley B.; grandson Joseph, who was living with him in 1850 census; great-grand-daughter Elizabeth Ann, wife of Alexander Johnston. Daniel stated he had lived with his wife Nidsey, 50 years. There were doubtless other children for whom he had already provided. There was no further record of his wife. They were probably active in organizing of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in 1851 as well as giving land for same and are probably buried there in unmarked graves.
Coming with their parents were their sons Jesse and Wiley B., the 1840 census shows Daniel (E.) with 2, Jesse with 12, and Wiley B. with 9. Living with Daniel (E.) and wife in 1850 was Rhoda O'Quinn,(b.1771). In 1841 he made tax return for Elizabeth Horton as guardian...."
Query: Is Rhoda O'Quinn the grandmother of Daniel E. and the wife, Nidsey, of Daniel V. ??? - O'Quinn was 4 years older than Daniel V....
Looking for information on Daniel Ezell Horton born 1824 in S.C or perhaps
N.C. and moved to Washington county, Ga. and later to Stewart county, Ga.
About the same time there was a Daniel Horton bor about 1775 or 1776 who
had sons Willey and Jesse. Relationship to Daniel Ezell is debatable.
Daniel Ezell Horton married Mary Anne Rebecca Sherman and they had children,
Henry Clay, Monartus Nucomen, Monartus Nucomen(married Frank Jones), Virginia
(married Marin Luther Brown), Caroline (married Zachery Brown), and Mary
Jane (married a Streitman).

A typewritten paper found in my mother's files. Author is not cited, and
no date. Probably came from Lancaster Library? Mother can't remember.
It seems that this AMOS son of WM HORTON is the same AMOS who went to TN?
Can anyone confirm?
Sadly, the estate settlement of this William Horton seems to eliminate
Sophia HORTON(?) wife of Vincent Cato and mother of my William H. CATO of
Lancaster County and Williamson County, TN, as a sister of AMOS. No
progress on the relationship between Amos Horton and Wm. H. Cato.
Please let me know if you know of anything wrong in this info, and thanks
for your time.

Cynthia
Title: Descendants of William Horton of Lancaster District.
"In 1792, according to SC Archives records, William Horton, former
Revolutionary soldier, was living in the Waxhaws, a term often applied
loosely to greater portion of Lancaster County. Lancaster county old deeds
show that in 1793 he bought land on Little Lynches Creek not far from
present Pleasant Plain church. He was living there in 1796. He died there
about 1834 according the Lancaster county Equity records.
The equity records name eight children and a wife named Elizabeth. Of the
children, six survived him. The eight children were Jane, Sely, Susannah,
Michael, William Ransom, Hollis, Sterling, and Amos. The 1800 US Census
record shows that in that year all five of the boys were still in the home
ranging in ages under sixteen to 26 and over. One daughter over 26 was
still in the home. This indicates that by 1800 two of the girls had
already married. William and his wife both over 45 in 1800 were born about
1755.
The Lancaster County records and local Bible and cemetary records are the
sources of the following information, the greater portion being from
Lancaster court records.
When William Horton died and his estate was settled his wife received one
third.
The remaining two thirds was divided into eight parts, the following
children or grandchildren each receiving his share.
1. Jane Horton married ____ Deason (James?) No further information.
(Major James Deason was a member of the Lancaster County School Trustees
1809-1813.)
2. Sely Horton married ___ Perry. No further information.
3. Susannah Horton (Suckey) married (John?) Baskins. She had at least two
children of whom we find record. James B. Baskins and Elizabeth Baskins
who married Thomas Twitty before 1851.
4. Michael Horton had several children and grandchildren but only ones
recorded are Joseph Moore; Patrick Horton, son of Narcisser Horton (decd);
one daughter named Martha Jane Horton and a son Sanford Horton. (Miss
Robbie Horton, Lancaster county librarian, is descended from Sanford
Horton.)
5. William Ransom Horton married Jane Ingram, daughter of John and Sarah
Miller Ingram. He died about 1835 leaving his widow and three daughters,
namely Caroline (who later became Mrs. Samuel U. Robertson); Amanda (who
became Mrs. Evans Rollings); Elizabeth (Betty) who married a Johnson and
migrated from the state.
6. Hollis Horton (do not confuse with his nephew) married Molcey _______?
Hollis died before his father leaving his widow and the following children:
Jincey (Mrs. Hask ___?); Lewis Horton; Harriett Horton (Mrs. James
Kirkley); Louisa (Mrs. James Riddle); Hollis Horton; William Horton; Bartte
Horton; Molsey Horton; Churchill Horton; Lydia Horton; Charlotte Horton.
(Lydia later married Anderson Bowers. She was grandmother of Mr. James A
Cauthen New Hope section.)
7. AMOS HORTON married Sally ______? There are no records of his children
in Lancaster records. By November 13, 1837 he was living in Franklin
County, Tennessee.
8. Sterling Horton married Mary Truesdale. Sterling and Mary T. Horton
migrated to Crawford Co, Ga, where he died before 1837 leaving the
following heirs: a daughter (Mrs. William L. Johnson--do not confuse with
Betty Horton, dau of Ransom and Jane who also married a Johnson); a
daughter Mrs. William R.A.Ingram; Amos Horton, evidently named for his
uncle who migrated to Franklin County TN; Simmazinna Horton (do not confuse
with her niece who married Capt James M. Ingram); William R. Horton
(descendants in Columbia); James Jefferson Horton who married Sarah E.
Cauthen, dau of Thomas Cauthen; and finally a son who was deceased before
his father but who left the following children: Elizabeth I. Horton, Henry
Hollis Horton, Mary B. Horton, Everett H. Horton, Dineham Horton. The
descendants of James Jefferson Horton, son of Sterling Horton, are probably
more numerous in Lancaster County that any other Horton of this line...."

Your line must be: Amos,Sr/William/Michael/Ranford/??
Our dob is different for Ranford, which is no big deal, and I have his wife
as Algerina, a different spelling. My information came from Dora Reeves of
Heath Springs, SC, who I hope to see next month while we're at the Columbia
meeting of the Horton Family Association. I haven't seen a different
spelling on Ranford, but there were two William Ransom Hortons, which is
confusing, and had me at an impasse for many years! William named a son
William Ransom(1794-1830), and William's son Sterling(1775-1836)( my
GGG-GF), also named a son William Ransom Horton(1807-1880) who is my GG-GF,
and was in the group that migrated to Shelby County, Alabama in 1834, which
is where I now live. This William Ransom went by the name "Ransom". Some of
Michael's family also came later to Shelby County, AL, and I can look it up
if you're interested.
I would appreciate any data you have on Ranford and Algerina, as I have no
children for them, and some of my dates may be suspect. I do have much
confidence in Dora Reeves, though, and she descends from Michael. Her data
on my direct line all checked out.
The following is a chart from my database - A Direct Descendancy Chart from
Amos, Sr. to Ranford, which I hope is useful to you. If you want more info,
please let me know. Take care, and let's stay in touch. Garland Horton
