Elizabeth Taylor Baines

C.L. Schmenk - August 2008

According to VERY consistent census entries, Elizabeth Baines was born 1804 in North Carolina. Having recently gotten my hands on the will of Willie Taylor in the Toisnot Swamp area of NC he names his daughter Elizabeth Baines wife of Redmond, living in Greene Co., Alabama.

Redmond Baines of Nash County, NC appears to be the best “husband” candidate for Elizabeth. Elizabeth had a grandson named George Redmond Jones. Elizabeth lived, from at least 1828 until her death, on the same piece of land that the original Greene County land patent holder is Redmond B. Baines. Neither Elizabeth nor Redmond is listed in the Snedecor Directory 1855/1856 for Greene Co., AL.

Redmond Baines goes missing some time after the birth of Caroline October 1834 in Greene County and in 1842 Elizabeth took a mortgage on the property. Most likely she was able to do that because of the pending settlement of her father's will.

Elizabeth and daughters Frances, Mary, Harriet and Caroline are sandwiched between two pieces of property owned by Simon Murphy on the 1858 Snedecor map. Elizabeth’s land is subsequently distributed in 1908 to the heirs of Elizabeth Baines after the death of Caroline. All named heirs are her grandchildren by her daughters Harriet Baines Jones and Mary Baines Jones.

Regardless of her husband’s whereabouts, Elizabeth was in Greene County by 1828 when her first child listed on the 1850 census, Frances, was born. There could have been one or more children before Frances' birth. The last census listing for Elizabeth Baines is 1870. The 1880 census shows Frances and Caroline living alone and farming on the Baines land.

Daughters Frances (1828-) and Caroline (Oct. 1834-before Feb. 1908) never married. Two censuses show them with “debility”, an 1800’s medical term meaning, “Abnormal bodily weakness or feebleness; decay of strength. A term descriptive of a patient's condition and of no help in making a diagnosis.  Also called Asthenia.” It appears that Caroline died early in 1908 (according to legal paperwork in Greene and Pickens Counties in February for distributing her estate) and the land passed to her nieces and nephews. All named heirs immediately sold out to William Murphy Jasper Jones, grandson of Elizabeth, son of Alfred and Harriet Baines Jones.

Harriet Baines was born about 1833 in Greene County, AL and married Jan. 8, 1852 Sampson Strickland, an elderly widower who lived next door with his son and daughter. We assume Sampson died - but have not found a burial for him or his first wife Clary Taylor Strickland who was first cousin to Elizabeth Taylor Baines. Sampson was significantly older than Harriet. On November 30th of the same year Harriett married Alfred Edward Jones. Both marriages were in Greene County, Alabama. Harriet died after Feb. 20, 1872 when her last child Sallie was born, and before Dec. 17, 1872 when Alfred married Mrs. Margaret Jane Jones Crump Hurst. Jane Jones was the daughter of Marshall Spears Jones Jr., and Elizabeth [Hill] Jones, of St. Clair County, Alabama. Harriet’s grave has not been found. Alfred is buried alone at Bethel Cemetery between Reform and Carrollton in Alabama. He has a relatively new grave stone with CSA information on it. His old stone is placed behind the new one. Alfred's third and last marriage was to Mary V. Colvin “Kitty” who is buried in Unity with her parents. Alfred only had children with Harriet (that we know about...) See separate articles about this Jones clan beginning in Greene County with Edmund J. Jones and his wife Mildred Murphy.

Mary Baines was born about 1831 in Greene County, AL and married Leonard Ellis Jones April 5, 1856 in Greene County, Alabama. Mary died after the 1880 census and before October 27,1890 when Leonard married the widow Mrs. Margaret C. Hudgins in Pickens County, Alabama. Margaret C. Jones, previous wife of Frank F. Hudgins, is buried at Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Greene County alongside Leonard's nephew John A. Jones. Leonard's third marriage was to Mary E. Jordan on September 1, 1897 in Pickens County, AL. She is buried at Salem Cemetery in Pickens County, but not beside Leonard who is also buried there. Mary E. Jordan Jones died 1902. Leonard married a fourth time about 1903 in Pickens County to Julia. Her last name is not known. Neither Mary Baines Jones’ nor Julia Jones’ graves have been found. Leonard Ellis Jones is a brother of Alfred Edward Jones - Mary's brother-in-law. See separate articles about this Jones clan beginning in Greene County with Edmund J. Jones and his wife Mildred Murphy.

LEGAL DOCUMENTS

Elizabeth's estate passed first to daughters Frances and Caroline. Elizabeth died after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census. Frances died after the 1880 census and before the 1900 census. Caroline died in late 1907 or early 1908. In the multiple 1908 legal documents ONE single document specially states “Elizabeth Baines and Caroline, both deceased”. At Caroline's death the estate (same 1858 Snedecor land and everything on that land) was jointly given to the heirs of Elizabeth Baines since neither Frances nor Caroline ever married. Those heirs are the children of Harriet Baines Jones and her husband Alfred E. Jones and Mary Baines Jones and her husband Leonard E. Jones.

Original land patent to Redmond B. Baines Dec. 01, 1830, certificate #6327, 80.02 acres located at W ½ NE ¼ Township 23 north, range 1 east, section 8. Patent was purchased FOR Redmond B. Baines by assign Brewster H. Jayne.

1958 Snedecor Map shows Elizabeth Baines. East and West of her is Simon Murphy. South of Elizabeth is J. W. Scarbrough, Jr. North of her is John Cockrell.

I know that Redmond is not a brother to my Henry Baines but that he is kin.
This Redmond is from Nash County, North Carolina. You will find him there in court minutes along with the rest of the Baines. Also, there was A Rich Banes that married Elizabeth Ham Nov. 8, 1826 in Franklin County, North Carolina. This date would be about right because your Francis Baines was born @ 1828. Sherlee

Richmond Baines is listed in the 1855/1856 Snedecor Directory as a planter in UNION range 2 east, Township 23 north, section 30. Possible son of Henry Baines, Sr., of Greene County. There are no children in our Baines/Jones clan with the name “Richmond”.

Marriage recorded in NC:
Groom: Richmond Banes
Bride: Eiza Ham
Bond Date: 08 Nov 1826 (this date fits ok, except they had kids before marriage or he had kids from a previous marriage in the census above)
Bond #: 000046771
Level Info: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
ImageNum: 003272
County: Franklin
Record #: 02 013

Note from KJ: Marriage certificate Dec. 12th 1836 Greene County for Richmond Baines and Miss. Mary Murphy – I suspect Richmond is related to Redmond. I believe their father (Richmond and Redmond’s) was Absalom Baines from Nash Co., NC. FURTHER research on this line yields a younger Redmond Baines and Jordan Baines still in NC 1860 – with Redmond serving in the CSA. Our Redmond was gone well before the Civil War.

KJ Notes on Elizabeth’s property:
5-26-1842 Elizabeth Baines Indenture between Samuel Carrollton, Greene Co., AL, payable to William Richardson on January 1, 1844. (Loan from Samuel, land from Richardson) Elizabeth purchased property (mortgage on 80 acres) in Greene County on May 26, 1842. Mortgage payable to William Richardson for the sum of $200. This land was passed down to her heirs in 1908. The land was transferred to Homer Carpenter according to the Snedecor map (1946) by J.T. McLemore, Civil Engineer, Eutaw AL.

KJ 03-04-2004 Notes about Redmond Baines:
Redmond Banes enumerated on 1830 Census in Greene Co., Alabama as follows: 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-9, 1 male 30-39, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 20-29. Richmond Banes and Abasalum were in Ferrills, Nash Co., NC at this time. Suspect Abasalum is father to Redmond, or possibly uncle. Abasalum’s children are known to have migrated to Greene.

If Redmond was the husband of Elizabeth, then all of the males in the family disappeared. Now that isn’t out of the question, but the female dates don’t jive either. I suppose they could have had more kids (or children from prior marriages) and then something terrible happened (Indians, plague, who knows) or possibly a wagon train went on to Texas....

BAINES Roster: Company A & B, North Carolina 47th Infantry Regiment (CSA). http://members.aol.com/Crovak/NC47CoAB.html Roster: Company A & B, North Carolina 47th Infantry Regiment(C.S.A.).

The rosters of Company A, aka the "Chicora Guards", and Company B of the North Carolina 47th infantry regiment was compiled from muster rolls available from the National Archives. This is by no means a comprehensive list, a more complete and detailed roster can be located from other published sources. The roster listing is organized alphabetically by Company, officers, non-commissioned officers and privates. Only their final rank achieved within each company is included. The men that served in these two companies came primarily from Franklin, Nash and Wake Counties.

REDMOND BAINES SPECULATION:

Suspect that Redmond was related to Henry Baines: BAINES/BANES- 8/25/97 - -Seeking information on Henry Baines born about 1779 in Nash co. N.C. married Bedy Jordan 1808, migrated to Greene co. Al. about 1826. Henry died Feb. 2, 1851 in Greene Co. Children were Littleberry, Francis, Calvin, Richmond, Henry, Jordan, Levicy, and Bedy. Richmond Baines married Mary Murphy, 1836 in Greene Co., Alabama. I am researching Joab Mobley who was listed as being 60 years old on the 1850 Greene County, AL census. On this census, his birthplace was listed as South Carolina. I have his birth year as 1789 which would validate the age on the census. His daughter, Pinkie (sometimes spelled Pinkey) was married to Henry Baines in Greene County, AL in 1840. Henry Baines is my gggrandfather. Supposedly Joab Mobley is buried in Greene County, AL. Any additional information regarding Joab Mobley would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ludie Bains Rudolph lbrudolph @ att .net

There is an Elizabeth B Bain buried in Ashmore family cemetery, Pickens Co., b 1800. Married to James N Bain, 1798-1869. Suspect that this family is related to Absolam B Baines, of Nash Co., NC. Other Baines in Greene county at the same time descended from Absolam. Richmond and Absalum were on the 1820 and 1830 Nash County censuses.
