3 December 2006

In the late 40's and early 50's I lived in Green County on a farm named Strawberry Hill. It was
close to Forkland. I was wondering if the old one room school house was still standing in Forkland
and were there any pictures?

19 November 2006 DUNLAP

Who were Robert, Martha and Sarah Dunlap? Sarah was the first wife of Moses Hubbard. Her tombstone states she was the daughter of Robert and Martha Dunlap born in April of 1821. She is buried next to James Dunlap in Mesopotamia Cemetery in Eutaw AL who might be her grandfather. Sarah died 29 Aug 1839 at the age of 18 years and 4 months. Moses next married Rebecca Bell in May 1842 in Greene County. He had a son George Hubbard. Research shows Moses' father was Ichobod Hubbard. His grandfather was Phillip Hubbard. Despite all of this information, I do not know who Robert, Martha Dunlap and Sarah were.

8 Sep 2006 RICHARDSON
I live in Mississippi and I'm descended from William Rice Richardson (1814-1857) who is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. I visited this cemetery some 15 or 16 years ago. From your website I see that new markers have been erected over the graves of some of my ancestors, William Rice Richardson included. I'd like to find out who took the trouble and expense to do this so I can thank them for their wonderful effort.

Sincerely,

Douglas Richardson [douric@netdoor.com]

Looking for someone to research records in the county court house regarding Green Hill & wife Obedience (Thornton). There should be a probate of his estate after he died in 1830. 1 August 2006 UNDERWOOD

I am currently researching the Underwood family and particularly, Andrew Jackson Underwood (b. 1815-d.1893) the brother of Nimrod T. Underwood (b. 1820-d.1897) of Franklin County.

I have information that A. J. Underwood owned property in Greene County Alabama between 1856 and 1858. I have strong reasons to believe that A. J. Underwood owned a slave, John Underwood, who was my gggrandfather. The 1850 Slave schedule for Greene County and the 1860 Slave Schedule for the Western Division of Franklin County indicate that A. J. Underwood was the owner of several slaves, the first listed on both schedules matching the age my gggrandfather would have been at each census.

I also know that A.J. Underwood lived with his daughter, Mary Lenora Underwood Hughes and her husband, William R. Hughes by 1880 and that he probably moved to Texas with them.

If you have any information regarding Andrew Jackson Underwood, particularly when and why he left Greene County, Alabama and ended up in Meridian, Texas where he is buried, I would greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me and/or let me know how I might find this information. I am particularly interested in records of Andrew Underwood's sale of two slaves, a female named Lucinda and her child George, to a Spencer family when he left Greene County. A bill of sales, plantation/farm records, or records of his blacksmith business etc. would be helpful.

I sincerely appreciate any assistance that can be provided!

23 JULY 2006 DAVES

I'm wondering if there is available a book of Wills for Greene County, AL? I've looked at the partial list and do not find the person for whom I search, Thomas Haynes Daves. I would like to have WB info so I might send for a copy of his will (once I learn where to send and the fee). Once transcribed I'd be delighted to have it posted on your website.

1. THOMAS HAYNES DAVES was born in New Bern, September 24, 1791. He was for many years Sheriff of Craven Co. He married HARRIET HATCH of New Bern on 11 March 1812, and in January 1836, moved to Alabama, where he died, 11 September 1839.

I did locate a marriage record for his daughter: viii. JOHN ELMORE WINBOURNE DUBOIS, b. October 08, 1841, Greensboro, AL; d. May 30, 1910, Birmingham, AL; m. (1) BETTIE HATCH DAVES, March 17, 1869, Mobile, AL10; b. August 17, 1849; d. September 05, 1869;

Sometimes Thomas H. Daves surname has been transcribed in records as Davis. He was from Craven County, NC & I imagine moved to Greene County as a senior probably living with some Hatch relations (in-laws). Here is a bit of information , which I quote from:

Recollections of Newbern Fifty Years Ago. Our living and our dead
Planters Residing In Town

THOMAS H. DAVES, a brother of the preceding gentleman [John Pugh Daves], was the very reverse of him in popular favor, and had been sheriff of Craven county just for the sake of mixing with the people, and doing them acts of kindness. His fortune was sufficient to enable him to do without office of any kind. He had a pleasant word for everybody, and seemed to declare, by the benevolent expression of his face, that his own happiness consisted in making other people happy. I am not clear enough in my recollection to state positively whether he married Miss Bryan, or a daughter of General Durant Hatch. I believe he married both, as he was at one time a widower. Mr. Daves removed to Greene County, Alabama, where he died. I do not remember his children, except that he had a son named Durant Hatch Daves.

Mary Brocklebank [msbrock@appleisp.net]

The best resource for this is to contact the person that works in the Greene County Court House where all of the wills are and she will do a search for $10. She will tell you how many pages are available, which includes looking in the probate file, and give you an estimate based on $1.00 per page. The nice thing is, if there is no will there may still be a probate file, which has all kinds of interesting information in it. Receipts for all kinds of things and usually a copy of the original will before it was recorded.

This link has the Green County Courthouse contact info on it:

13 JULY 2006 HAMMETT

HAMMETT family from Boligee. Looking for any descendents of Henry C. Hammett, born abt. Aug. 1843 SC who lived in Mantua and Boligee. His first wife was Sarah J. and they had at least 3 children--Vardra born 1870 and Etta born July 1873/75 and Robert Henry born Feb 1878.By 1900, Sarah had died and he had married Araminta (Mittie) Gandy, daughter of Daniel J. Gandy & Thetney Murphy. They had 9 children (1910 census tells) including Elizabeth born 1894, Balmer or Valmar born 1895, Mattie L. 1897, & Mary W. 1899, and Sallie born 1902. By 1910, (Mary A.) Mittie was widowed. Death index shows she died Oct. 17, 1911 and Sallie died May 14, 1910. That left Etta, Henry R., Lizzie, & Balmar/Valmar. Lizzie moved to B'ham where she married and lived until her death. She had no children. Balmar did have children, including a daughter Barbara, probably born in the late 1930's. Mittie was buried in Clinton, but does not give the cemetery. I would like to know her cemetery information and information on any children buried near her. Would also like to learn more about Balmar's family. Mittie was the sister of my great-grandfather Daniel Jones Gandy. Charlotte Patterson [cdhp@charter.net]

8 July 2006 NEAL
I am reviewing this website, and find it absolutely fascinating. I am researching information on the Jones and Neal families, both of Eutaw. Specifically, my grandfather was Isaac Neal and my grandmother was Mamie Jones Neal.

Although there are some family members remaining in the area, specifics and details are scarce. I know they originated in the Boligee and Allison areas, and I have found my grandfather's name on the Census report. My grandfather was born in 1892 and my grandmother was born in 1898. She passed in 1947, and to my knowledge was the first person buried at the Friendship Zion Baptist Church Cemetery (located in Allison or Boligee).

I realize that records for the African-American community are rare, if existent at all. So if you or a colleague can point me in the right direction, I will do the rest.

Thanks for the website, I truly appreciate it. Dhodge1960@aol.com

4 JULY 2006 EASLEY
I am a descendant of Robert Easley, Warham Easley Sr.-> Warham Easley, Jr. -> William H. Easley -> Alfred N. Easley.

I am having difficulty proving Warham Easley Jr. is the father of William H. Easley. I know that he is, but I cannot find the documentation to prove this for DAR membership. As Warham left Caldwell Co., KY in 1824, I found where a will was probated on March 10, 1828 in Green Co., IL.

Could I possibly get you to make me a copy of this will. I will gladly pay you for the copying. Any information that you have concerning Warham Easley would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU,

28 June 2006 MURPHY

I have a mother and father that just disappear from the face of the earth between 1840-1850. Father's name is Theophilus Murphy, mother is Lydia Wardlaw Murphy. Married Greene Co. 1835; 1840 census of Greene Co. has the two of them and dau. Caroline, dau. Elizabeth and baby boy. They are 11 households away from her father Wm. Wardlaw. Wm.'s will dated 211-1840 mentions the granddaughters. Theophilus was named Executor but in going through papers from Greene Co. courthouse, I found that at some time during the probating of the will, another fellow was named Executor because Theophilus Murphy "was in Texas". On the 1850 census, the two sisters are in the home with their maternal aunt and uncle, Margaret Wardlaw Stephens and Benjamin Stephens. I've searched Texas and AL to no avail. Are there any old obit records from Greene Co.? I think the parents and baby brother died. Any active Genealogical Society that might have access to old records??? 06 March 2006 COCKRELL

Jonathan Cockrell Family:

I am seeking information on Jonathan Cockrell (b. 1778 in Edgecombe- now Nash - County N. C.) and his wife Anna Tant (b. 1776). They were married 20th March 1804 in Franklin County. N. C. In 1850 he is listed in the census of Green County, AL. Jonathan died 4 September 1869.

Their children were Henrietta, born 1804 in N. C.; William born @ 1806 in N. C.; Mary born @ 1810 in N. C. who married Joseph W. Jones; Nathan J. born 1811, married Temperance Ann Horn; and Hillsman born 1812 in N. C. who married (1) Louise Horn and (2) Amelia Elizabeth Stephens.

Jonathan's brother, Nathan Cockrell, who was born about 1782 and married Nancy Williams also moved to Alabama as did another brother William Haywood Cockrell.

I am hoping some of the Cockrell descendents are still living in Greene county and may be able to give me more information on the parents of Jonathan and Anna Cockrell. I know Jonathan's father was Jacob and his mother was Penelope who most likely married again after Jacob's death in 1792.

I descend from Henrietta Cockrell who married Samuel Thomas Lofton on 2nd March 1828 in Greene County, AL.
