Greene County Alabama Queries 1999 and Prior
MAY -
12/19/99 -My name is Frank Boon May III. My great grandfather was
Pleasant May (1828-1864) of Greene County and, subsequently, of Benton P.O.,
Choctaw County. He married Joanna Boon of LaGrange, GA. in 1855. In the Census
of 1860 his personal property was value at $65000 and real estate of $6000. He
was 32 yoa. In the 1850 Census he was listed as a farmer in Marion County. He
was 21 yoa. There are a number of Pleasant Mays but they have middle initials
(H, J, B, etc.). My Pleasant often signed himself as P. I think this was to
differentiate himself from his cousins who were named Pleasant, also.
I have documents to indicate that he was treated by two doctors in 1864. He
died subsequently. His widow, her three children (including my grandfather), and
her mother moved to Richmond, TX and appeared on the 1870 Texas Census. Joanna
Boon May had married a man named Crittenden in the interim and she used her new
name when she moved to Texas. I never found out what happen to Crittenden, who
he was, where he came from, who is family was, etc. My father's family thinks
that he was kin to the governor of KY. I had investigated Joanna Boon's
family in GA. and N.C., earlier. She graduated from the Southern Female College
in 1853. I know an awful lot about her and her families (the Boons and Greenes).
That's another story, however.
The name Pleasant May appears twice on Al. unit records (1) 2nd Cav. Co.
C and (2) 5th Cav. Co. A. Which of these is my great-grandfather or are they one
and the same individual? The one from Choctaw County would probably be my
great-grandfather. I wonder if he was wounded and died of his wounds in 1864. He
could have contracted some disease which is certainly likely. The next question
is where was he buried?
Aside from Pleasant May's military record I would like to find some
record of his father (Pleasant, Jr.) and mother (maybe Nancy Avery). As strange
as it seems I know a lot about this family up to Pleasant May's birth. And I
know about his marriage and family after his marriage. The problem, as you know,
is that the Census in 1830 just lists, by name, the head of the household. I
look forward to your reply. Thanks! F. B. May III

FORTSON/OWEN -
12/19/99 -I am William Parham Owen III.
My Great Grandfather was Theodore Clifton Owen (1852-1919) who married Arila
(Addie) Fortson. She was the daughter of Elijah Satterwhite Fortson from
Green County Alabama. Although an aunt of mine used our Fortson line for her DAR
membership, your information is much more complete. Family history says that
Addie was kicked out of the house at age 16 because she went to a dance without
her father's permission. He was a baptist minister and aparently very strict. He
was in the 2nd Texas Calvary (or some other Texas Calvary unit, my notes are not
convenient) and was paroled near Shreveport. TC Owen was the overseer of a
cotton plantation near Shreveport called Freestate. He and Addie were
brutally murdered by an axe wielding field hand in their sleep. They were
elderly at the time. The front page newspaper from February 15, 1919 makes very
interesting reading because the murderer was a black man named Will Faulkner and
he was taken from the policemen and lynched. One of the police officers, William
Monkhouse, was a son-in-law.
Elijah R. Fortson is my 2nd GreatGrandfather. My greatgrandmother is Ada
Arilla Fortson, 129 below.
42. Elijah Richardson3 FORTSON (8.Elijah2, 1.William1) was born 8 Aug 1831 in
Greene Co., AL. Elijah died 30 Jan 1905 in Grand Cane, DeSoto Par., LA. He moved
to LA in 1846 with his parents and moved to TX by 1860. He was a minister. He
married (1) Arilla HILL 29 Nov 1855 in Caddo Par., LA. She was born 22 Aug 1831
in Greene Co., AL, the daughter of Berry HILL and Elizabeth REACH. Arilla died 6
Aug 1873 in TX, and was buried in Caddo Par., LA. They had 5 children
127. F i. Mary A. E. FORTSON, born about 1856/1857 in TX. She married Henry
E. JETER 1 Dec 1874. He was born before 1856. 128. F ii. Marianna J. FORTSON,
born about 1858/1859 in TX.
129. F iii. Ada A. FORTSON, born about 1863 in Caddo Par., LA.
+ 130. M iv. William P. FORTSON, born Oct 1864.
131. v. (Baby) FORTSON, born about Jan 1870 in Caddo Par., LA, died before
1880 in Caddo Par., LA. Elijah next married (2) Martha Jane HILL after 6 Aug
1873 in LA. She was born after 1831 in AL, another daughter of Berry HILL and
Elizabeth REACH. Martha died after 1920 in TX. They had 1 child
132. M vi. David E. FORTSON, born 3 Oct 1875 in Caddo Par., LA, died 30 Jun

ARCHIBALD/SHIELDS/GOINS - 12/05/99 - Please, I am trying desperately to connect an Archibald family with a
Shields family and posable Goins. I have found a S. N. Archibald in 1850
Limestone Co, Texas who lived in Alabama 1838, he married a woman by the name of
Mary Ann? from TN. First child born 1838 . Marriage posable around 1837---I am
looking for a Sarah (Sally) Archiblad who married a Benjamin F. Shields he
was from Perry Co, AL, although born in South Carolina. All things related end
up in Bexar County Texas by 1867, but everything I have traced so

Cos. I have many Archibald's in Green Co. early on which leads me to believe
these may be the related families I am looking for, some of whom moved to Texas
around 1848-51. I know I am on the right track, just need some little something
to lock in, and then I can know which court house to go to for records as I have
been very lucky in that respect with the Alabama Court Houses Anything would be
appreciated, Thank you. -- Mamie MAMB43@aol.com

ASHLEY/PERRIN - 09/19/99 -Robert Franklin ASHLEY (b 1829 Robeson Co, NC)
grew up in Montgomery Co, AL & moved his family to Texas after the Civil War.
His daughter, Alice Ann ASHLEY, married an unrelated Robert Perrin ASHLEY
(31 Dec 1869, Green Co, AL) His uk mother (a PERRIN) was like "the woman at the
well," one with many husbands, as the rumor goes. Robert had a brother, Thomas,
who had a son, "Dove", so he may have been related to the LaDove ASHLEY b
15 Jan 1865 Green Co, AL. The BYERS name also may be related to this family.

CHILDERS - 09/19/99 -My husband states that Patrick
Henry was one of 3-5 brothers that lived in Greene Co. Apparently, the Childers
came from North or South Carolina; my husband says South Carolina. A descendant
of Patrick Henry CHILDERS is Wesley Childers who married Annie Johnson.
Wesley's siblings were (from Bible recordings of my husband's
mother) Clovis Childers, Carnie Childers, Jack Childers, Gerlha or Gertha
(Franklin) Shotts, Luther Childers, Ed Childers, Effie Holland, and Nervie
Miller. My husband's father was Fred Edgar Childers who married Emma L.
(Robinson) Childers. They lived in Franklin County. Apparently, descendants of
Patrick Henry Childers moved to Franklin County, but I am not sure which
generation. Can you help found out more on Patrick Henry Childers?
Anything would be helpful. We have found some Childers in Virginia and a few in
Carolinas, but are not sure of anything. Thank you...AdrienneChilder@cs.com
Gullett/Gullet Family circa 1843 - 09/19/99 -I am seeking information on the
Benjamin D. Gullett family who lived in Eutaw, AL, mid 1800's. He and several

MS, then Louisiana where he became a large manufacturer of cotton gins.

Greene Co. probate records/SIMS/LEWIS - 09/19/99 -I think there is a mistake
in the probate records that might be easy to fix. The original clerk would have
made the error in all likelihood, but on a trip a few years ago to the
courthouse I missed a will that is valuable to my current research and I think I
found it. Under Elizabeth Lewis, perhaps, in the online index but certainly in
the records is a James Lewis ... deceased indexed by Puline Gandrud as possibly
Sims. Actually the entry is for James Lewis (aka Louis) Sims, deceased as the
proceedings are read. The executrix is Elizabeth Sims Gordon and witnesses Jesse
and Jefferson Gordon. Jesse is by the way a Rev. War veteran. Elizabeth is the
daughter of James Louis Sims. The beneficiaries are mosly Elizabeth's children
named Gorden ( the clerk may have mixed up the name but shamelessly mixed
spellings of the Gordon's in the same document. Are these records still
surviving? I have done quite a bit of research on the Sims surname in the county
and continue to hit a brick wall, but this could be a breakthrough. This is
certainly an interesting family regardless of lineage which is secondary to my
search anyway. Also, Is there a county historian or a railroad buff you know
about in the area? My ancestor Henry Jackson Sims may have come to Greene County
ca 1835 to build a railroad, as indicated by the census in 1840. -- "Robert E.

LIGHTFOOT - 05/31/99 -I hope someone can be of assistance in my
research for family of Dr. Philip Lightfoot of Morven in Greene County. A couple
of years ago I attempted to find something on his descendants and hit a brick

William had a daughter named Amelia b. 1836 in Miss. (I think in Pass
Christian). I am seeking some letters she wrote and received during the Civil
War, as she was writing to some prominent CSA Generals. As far as I can
ascertain, Amelia never married, but I cannot find out a thing about her in any
census. She had a sister Sallie who married Robert Tarleton of Mobile in 1864.

EUTAW RANGERS - 05/22/99 -I sent you a message about a year or so ago
about a Greene County-related site that I thought you might like to add to the
ALGENWEB site you administer but I never heard from you. Thought I would try

Capt. Sydenham Moore in the Mexican War. The site not only tells about the
Rangers but also includes a name list. The URL is
http://www.cyberramp.net/~texian/history/us/rangers.htm . Recently, the
organization of which I am president, The Descendants of Mexican War Veterans,
published my book The Eutaw Rangers The Mexican War Journal and Letters of Capt.
Sydenham Moore and the Mexican War Journal of Pvt. Stephen F. Nunnalee. You can
find out more about it at http://www.dmwv.org/dmwv/pubs.htm . I have visited Greene County
twice in the past three years. Two summers ago, I gave a lecture on the Eutaw
Rangers at the annual meeting of the Greene County Historical Society. I hope
you will agree that my website on the Rangers is worthy of a link to your site
on Greene County. Thanks. "Steven R. Butler"

JOLLY - 05/22/99 - I am looking for info on the JOLLY family of Greene
Co. Especially one Samuel Jolly, pre-CW and later, and his parents. Where would
I be able to look at the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Greene Co. Have these been
printed in any form? Would the Greene Co. Historical Society be able to help
with this query? Thanks for your time and assistance. Regards, Don L. Shadburn,
Forsyth County (GA) Historian
PO Box 3121, Cumming, GA 30028.
PS: I had one John JOLLY who has disappeared from this county by 1850,
then reappears in 1852 in old Cass (now Bartow) Co., GA. He was first sheriff of
original Cherokee County, GA, in 1832,when the county extended from the
Chattahoochee River to Ala. He was later sheriff of Forsyth County in 1833-34.
He doesn't appear on the 1850 census for any GA county. I suspect he could have
been in Al. The old Jollys came into Franklin Co., GA, from SC at an early date.
Also, you can check out the Forsyth County Web Page for info on my publications

PURNEL FAMILY/ ORANGE GROVE PLANTATION -
05/22/99 -Does anyone have information on a Plantation entitled "Orange
Grove"? Many of my ancestors (the line of Dr. William Henry Purnell) are buried
in a cemetery at Orange Grove. At the time of his death (1839) it was located 12
miles outside of Greensboro. In 1873 the plantation belonged to Ex-governor See
of Alabama. At the time of Dr. Purnell's death, the plantation passed to his
son, Hortensius Purnell. The Purnells had left Alabama by the 1850's and moved
to Mississippi. In a letter, written sometime in 1910, from Mrs. Fannie Avery
Cobbs (daughter of Rev. Avery who took over as the pastor at St. John's Church
of the Prarie of Greensboro, AL, founded in 1834) she states that she has
visited the old family burial ground of the Purnell's and found it in excellent
condition. I am aware that a lot can happen in 80 years however. Another letter
from the 1920's states that a relative (P. Mitchell Milner) was taken back for
burial and that the cemetery is on a hill. I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks. - "Donn Bolliger" av8tor@lcc.net

Heritage Book for Greene County - 04/09/99 -The deadline for the Heritage
Book for Greene County has been extended to July 31st, 1999. If your ancestor
was here before 1890, you may write a thousand word story. Otherwise, you can
write a five hundred word story. You may submit pictures but they
should be on slick finish paper. A copy like we get at most copying places, for
example, a lot of libraries, will not do. If you need a brochure to order the
book, e-mail me at syphi@tusc.net
and I will send one to you. At present, we do not have 100 stories. You may also
write on an old school, some noteworthy event that happened in Greene County at
any time or anything pertaining to the county that would make for interesting
reading. The more stories that we get, the better book we can have. If you order
before the book is published, you will save money. So please, if you have ties
to Greene County, Alabama, send us your story or stories. There are three or
four of us collecting the stories and I am the only one on the web. Sincerely,

CALDWELL/CAROLINE -12/13/98 - I am following some old
family notes and looking for a ancestors and descendants of a John H. CALDWELL.
The middle name maybe Hays. He is said to be a relative but I am not sure how.
According to a reported newspaper account on 29 Oct 1843 he married a Amelia
CAROLINE in Forkland, Greene County, AL. According to family notes they moved to
St. Clare County, AL and homesteaded there. A James CALDWELL moved to Forkland
in 1819 at the age of 79. He was born in Ireland in 1740, came to America in
1778 and naturalized in Fairfield County, SC in 1809. One of his sons may have
moved to Forkland before him. He is suppose to have died in Greene or St. Clare
Counties, AL. His son would have been the father of John H. CALDWELL. We do not
know the name of the son who went before the father. Any information on or a
contact to a CALDWELL or CAROLINE family would be welcomed. - John D.
