WILLIAMS - 11/21/02 -
I am working on my Williams line in Pickens/Greene, and am going over your site for help.
We are planning a trip to Pickens and I tried to get a lookup from Bill
Horton of Hayneville on the Greene site. His email address has changed, or else
he has withdrawn his offer to do lookups. He showed sipsey@htcnet.net. It bounced. Does
anyone happen to know how I can contact him?
Second, under the 1830 Census heading, I found a paragraph on Isaac Williams: "Isaac
Williams was a Captain in Col. Henry Dyers Regiment of the TN Militia during the
Creek Indian War. He was severely wounded in the Battle of Talledega in November 1813 and
served until 25 Dec 1813. He drew a disability pension from 1818 until his death in 1847.
He lived in Bedford Co, TN in 1817, in Perry Co, AL in 1821, in Greensboro, Greene Co, AL
in 1822, in Carroll Co, MS in 1839 and until his death before August 1847, in Choctaw Co,
MS. In 1839, he said he move to Carroll Co, MS to live with his sons and
sons-in-law." Does anyone know the source of this statement or any other info about
this individual and his line? Thanks. -- Gordon Smith gordonsmith@cablelynx.com

Williams. Does anyone have wills in these lines that
might mention these four brothers? Also, I am looking
for the father of Sarah Ann Martin, who married Elijah Williams in Greene in 1823.Thanks. Gordon Smith gordonsmith@cablelynx.com

CAMPBELL/ PIERCE - 10/02/02- Edward Fenwick Campbell (1827-1886) of
Augusta, GA married Annie C. Pierce Oct. 17, 1860 of Eutaw in the Episcopal Church there.
She was a daughter of Judge William Franklin Pierce and Mary E. Ratcliffe of Eutaw. Judge
Pierce died 11 Aug. 1873 and his wife 10 Sept. 1864. I have never figured out how Campbell
met his wife, he being from Augusta and she from Eutaw, so many miles apart; unless,
Campbell was visiting his 1st cousin, Joseph Wheeler, later Lt. Gen. Joe Wheeler of CSA
who was also of Augusta but moved with his parents to Alabama when but a lad. Campbell s
mother and Wheeler s mother were sisters and daughters of Gen. William Hull of Newton,
Mass. I am fairly familiar with Campbell genealogy but not Pierce genealogy. Can anyone
shed any light on the Pierces of Eutaw? Campbell and Annie Pierce had one daughter, Mary
Frances Campbell. Annie died Dec. 25, 1869. In 1879 Campbell took another wife from Ala.,
a widow, Mary Esther Borden Cheney. A daughter of this marriage was Martha Campbell who
married John B. Byrd of Eutaw. Does anyone know of any descendants of the Byrds? I am VP
of Augusta Genealogical Society and Trea. Of Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society.

THOMAS - 07/10/02- Looking for early
residents of Greene County. There follows information for Jeremiah Thomas from Edgefield,
SC. I visited Greene County at the county seat in Eutaw across from Scooba while at a
family reunion several years ago. These Thomas' are on the census and I've traced them to
Scooba. I'm trying verify the name of William A. Thomas wife. It's shown on his sons death
certificate as Polly Roaden. Most of my Thomas bunch were from around Edgefield and I
think over into Savannah, GA.
Seeking information on Jeremiah Thomas, place of Birth and parents. Through a lease
Jeremiah Thomas of the state of GA, planter, was present in Edgefield County, 96 Dist, SC
in Oct 1795. Sold land granted to him in Oct 1794 on Little Steven's Creek and waters of
the Savannah River. His name appears on the SC 1800 census. Jeremiah Thomas served in the Revolution
during 1778 under a Capt. Anderson Thomas and 1782 under Capt. Robert Frost in SC. Note in
the Audited Accounts 7725. I believe he had at least two sons, Joshua, b 1799 and
Jeremiah 1800 something. Joshua was my GGGrandfather he is shown in Greene County, in
Jones and Gandrud Records on pages 82 & 83, Vol. 94 or 108. My GGrandfather was
William A. Thomas born in Green Cty, AL in 1829 and Grandfather was Charles William Thomas
b Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in 3-10-1863 where he married Sallie Frances Blair in 1890 and
moved to Houston, TX where he worked for the Southern Pacific RR. Joshua and Jeremiah were
present in Scooba, Kemper Cty, MS, in the mid/late 1800s. Joshua at age 71 married to a
Narcissa with a son David on the 1870 census. I have these Thomas's in Texas to date.
There was a Josiah (John) Thomas at the Red Bank Baptist church on the little Saluda
River in Edgefield Dist before 1792. He was on the 1790 census for Edgefield Dist, SC.
Thought these names might be of the same family somehow. There was a Reverend John Thomas
in that area of SC that is credited with some 12 children that lived to become adults.
During the course of year, he had at least two wives and lived to a very old age. This
dates back to prior to the Revolutionary War. This Reverend Thomas is most aptly the
father or grandfather to the Thomas families in that area of SC. And, check your history
references. Prior to the War of 1812, very few settlers were stupid enough to cross the
Ocmulgee River at Dames Ferry in Jones Co...... The settlers, that did, met with dire
consequences; if the Creek didn't slaughter them between the Ocmulgee and the
Chattahoochee, the Choctaw did over in what is now Alabama. BEFORE Alabama WAS Alabama, it
was just a part of Georgia. Check the date of division for a clear date of Alabama coming
into existence.

AL after about 1820, and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Eutaw ("Departed this

WILLIAMS Marriage - 05/05/02 -
In one source on early Greene marriages, someone sent me (1) a Williams marriage, spouse,
date, place, and (2) on the same page, the names of the "sponsors", but from a
different marriage, in a different county. I am wondering whether the copies of
certificates, or whatever they were, are incomplete like that, or if I can get all of the
above info on each couple. I believe that it was from a book called ALABAMA VITAL RECORDS
MARRIAGES 1808-1920, but I am not sure. Anyway, I know about these two marriages, but I am
hoping to find the parents of the two couples. George W. Williams married Mary
"Polly" Cotton in 1823 in one account, 1824 in another; and Elijah Williams
married Sarah Ann Martin in 1823. Both took place in Greene County. Thank you very much.

Civil War Skirmish Near Pleasant Ridge - 03/16/02- For the last year I have been
researching this engagement which has in most recent publications been placed almost
entirely near Romulus in Tuscaloosa County. My research, however, has conclusively
determined that the skirmish began near Pleasant Ridge
and ran northward for some twenty miles, much of it in present Greene County, until the
fight ended near Romulus. Attached is my latest, though probably not final, version
of the fight, including the movement of the various forces prior to and after the
engagement. Since much of the main fight took place in what is now Greene County, maybe
this deserved a place on the county page. -- Scott Owens Anrkee@aol.com
Pleasant Ridge Civil War Skirmish - 03/16/02- I still am looking for family stories
about Federal activity in Greene County associated with Croxton's visit, so some
invitation of information or questions directed to myself would be appropiate. I do not
believe that the stories described in A Goodly Heritage relate
to this Federal force, but rather to a Yankee column which came through Eutaw and Greene
County in mid May 1865. I have the Official Records report on this column, including
observations by the commander reguarding civilian attitudes toward the Yankees at that
time. If you would like that would be glad to send it for posting. -- Scott Owens Anrkee@aol.com

JACKSON - 03/03/02- I have been trying to find the
grave site of JOSEPH JACKSON, early settler of Greene (now Hale) County. He
purportedly died in Eutaw on the 31st of March, 1861; the family homestead was just
about 8-10 miles north of Greensboro, so I imagine he would have been buried
somewhere in that county. I have spoken with several people in the area, and have
walked several cemeteries in both counties, but still have not found his grave. Does
anyone have any suggestions? The Caucasian family was not indigent...see
Snedecor''s...and had 11 children, though at the time of his death there likely were
only 3 or 4 children at home, and 2 left shortly thereafter to join the forces for the
War. His wife's name was Sarah C. Belton.-- Robert Jackson rjack711@aol.com

Jordan Artesian Well - 03/03/02- Does anyone happen to know anything about the history of
the Jordan Artesian Well in Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama? I have been trying for
years to locate a family for my ancestor who lived in Pickens County - first documented
there in the 1860 census. I only discovered recently, that his future wife likely lived in
Greene County in 1850. This caused me to explore this site. I came across information

THOMAS - 02/09/02- Looking for
early residents of Greene County. There follows information for Jeremiah Thomas from
Edgefield, SC. I visited Greene County at the county seat in Eutaw across from Scooba
while at a family reunion several years ago. These Thomas' are on the census and I've
traced them to Scooba. I'm trying verify the name of William A. Thomas wife. It's shown on
his sons death certificate as Polly Roaden. Most of my Thomas bunch were from around
Edgefield and I think over into Savannah, GA.
Seeking information on Jeremiah Thomas, place of
Birth and parents. Through a lease Jeremiah Thomas of the state of GA, planter, was
present in Edgefield County, 96 Dist, SC in Oct 1795. Sold land granted to him in Oct 1794
on Little Steven's Creek and waters of the Savannah River. His name appears on the SC 1800 census. Jeremiah Thomas served
in the Revolution during 1778 under a Capt. Anderson Thomas and 1782 under Capt. Robert
Frost in SC. Note in the Audited Accounts 7725. I believe he had at least two sons, Joshua, b 1799 and Jeremiah 1800
something. Joshua was my GGGrandfather he is shown in Greene County, in Jones and Gandrud
Records on pages 82 & 83, Vol. 94 or 108. My GGrandfather was William A. Thomas born
in Green Cty, AL in 1829 and Grandfather was Charles William Thomas b Scooba, Kemper Cty,
MS, in 3-10-1863 where he married Sallie Frances Blair in 1890 and moved to Houston, TX
where he worked for the Southern Pacific RR. Joshua and Jeremiah were present in Scooba,
Kemper Cty, MS, in the mid/late 1800s. Joshua at age 71 married to a Narcissa with a son
David on the 1870 census. I have these Thomas's in Texas to date.
There was a Josiah (John) Thomas at the Red Bank Baptist church
on the little Saluda River in Edgefield Dist before 1792. He was on the 1790 census for
Edgefield Dist, SC. Thought these names might be of the same family somehow. There was a
Reverend John Thomas in that area of SC that is credited with some 12 children that lived
to become adults. During the course of year, he had at least two wives and lived to a very
old age. This dates back to prior to the Revolutionary War. This Reverend Thomas is most
aptly the father or grandfather to the Thomas families in that area of SC. And, check your
history references. Prior to the War of 1812, very few settlers were stupid enough to
cross the Ocmulgee River at Dames Ferry in Jones Co...... The settlers, that did, met with
dire consequences; if the Creek didn't slaughter them between the Ocmulgee and the
Chattahoochee, the Choctaw did over in what is now Alabama. BEFORE Alabama WAS Alabama, it
was just a part of Georgia. Check the date of division for a clear date of Alabama coming
into existence.

SMITH - 02/03/02- Genealogy is a new project to this old
lady, and I am facing the impossible Smiths from all branches of my family, with very
little known about any of them. I have been told that my great-grandmother's father, James
Henry Smith, was born in Clinton, Alabama. He married a Lizzie or Elizabeth, Linder or
similar last name, although I am not sure if he was still in Alabama at the time. His
first child was born August 1, 1866. I gather from this that he could have been born
around 1845, give or take a few years. My great grandmother was apparently his fifth
child, and was born in Louisiana in 1874. I would like to find a reliable source of
information for the names of his parents and their birthplaces, as I can't get any further
back than him. I have tried looking in the census records online, but I don't think the
ones available online cover the right time period or have enough information for me to tie
it all together when I have so little information to start. -- Aimée Grace Cowan gcowan@ev1.net Georgetown, Texas
HARDY/ HALL - 02/03/02- My
g grandparents, John W. Hardy and Cornelia C. Hall, married in Greene County, Al. in 1867.
I have found John Hardy on the 1850 census. It shows his father to be Aqulla (sp?) Hardy
and his mother as Louise A. S. Aqulla was 50 years of age and born in N.C. John W. and
Cornelia Hardy went to Texas in about 1882. Cornelia died in Cooke County, Texas and is
buried in the Dexter Cemetery. John W. Hardy died in Shamrock, Wheeler County, Texas in
1933. He is buried in the Shamrock Cemetery. One of John W. and Cornelia Hardy's
sons, Walter, returned to Greene County, Alabama and according to family was Sheriff
there. I believe he died in the 1940's. Who were Aqulla Hardy's parents? Who were Louisa
A. S. parents? Where did they marry? Did they die in Greene County and are they buried
there? There is a will of Aqulla Hardy in Will Book "D", Page 028 (1851-1888).
Would it be possible to obtain a copy of this will? Any information on this
Hardy family would be greatly appreciated.-- Don Hardy ceejayjay@msn.com

family physician on my father's farm in Greene County, Alabama." Would some
kind soul look for Dr. George Hillary Reid in Green County between the years 1855 and
1862? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.-- Martha Wurtele Marwurtele@aol.com

BOYATT - 01/20/02- Does any one have any info on a Boyatt
family ? I am working the name in the Tn/Ky and Ind. areas and think the ones listed in
the 1850 must be related, due to the spelling. The "A" spelling did not survive
in most areas and only one line carried it. The listing I found were for one Green Boyatt.
m. Mary...children,Sarah6,Robert5,John 3 and Stephan 1......later I show a Rufus
Boyatt...age 35. These people do not appear in my research as siblings of any other family
memeber, so believe they may be from the root line of Thomas Boyatt. Any one with ANY
info.please contact me. Thank you, BJ Boyatt MeowmumTu@hotmail.com
JAVINE - 01/20/02- I am a 24 year old man who is in a
desperate search for information about my family. I have been to several web sites and
still I have not found the information that I am looking for. my family is originally from
Greene Co. The place is called Pleasant Ridge. I have some info about the origin of the
family. We come from a family named JAVINE. I have found info about Joseph Javine who is
the first known Javine to the state of Alabama. My problem comes from finding info about
my blood relatives. We are of African American descant although the inherited name
comes from a prominent French fur trader. My grandfather is Eunice Javine Rev., and my
great grandfather is Abe Javine who was also a preacher. They are the only two ancestors I
know. There mothers I have no knowledge of. My great grandfather Abe was born in and
around the year 1865. My grandfather Eunice was born around 1905. If you can find any
information about these men and my family could you please share it with me. If you
could find or if you have any information about the Javine family I would be delighted to
hear from you. -- Kevin Javine SCOPE82@HOTMAIL.COM

LAY - 01/06/02- A Thomas G. Lay married a Nancy Gordan, July 16, 1827. I see that
"Lay" is listed in the 1830 census on the Greene Co, GenWeb site and I'd like
detailed info on that last name. Also, I believe that the Lay's left Greene and moved to
Scott County, MS. They brought with them a slave named Fannie. I also think that my
great-great grandpa who married Fannie, was the slave child of Thomas and an African
slave, who did not come with them to Scott County, MS. Fannie was born in 1833 and died in
1913. I believe Thomas and Nancy were born in 1807 and 1808. I'm starting to think
that the Gordan's left AL before the 1830's and Nancy married Thomas so her name changed,
since the Gordans are not listed in the census for 1830, however, there are 2 Gordans with
land in 1828. So, I'd like to find out who Thomas and Nancy's parents were, where they
were from and the their slave listings to find Fannie and her mom. I am trying to
determine which country in Africa they may have come from and which European country the
Lay's and Gordan's were from. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance and Happy New Year! --
