Springfield

The town of Springfield had more than 1,500 people in 1820 with big brick stores and two hotels. It was a successful township of cotton planters and home of the famous race horse, Daniel Boone. A cotton gin and a large warehouse were also there in a site at the Warrior River known as Meriwether’s Landing. Springfield is west of Meriwether's Landing about 3 miles north of Eutaw on U.S. 11.

According to the 1855-56 V. Gayle Snedecor Directory:

Springfield was one of the first towns settled, and for many years the most prominent place in the county west of the Warrior, but the removal of the county seat from Erie to Eutaw, (within three miles south of Springfield,) was not only the death blow to Erie, but wrecked the prosperity of Springfield. Now there are two Dry Goods Stores and one Church at the place, and about 40 inhabitants.
