Younger Brothers Posse - 1876
Benjamin M. Rice grandson of Hopkins Rice
Per Joe Herrera: Ben is back row without face hair, about
age 25
Per MN Historical Society (owner of pic) Ben is center back
row
Front left-right: Sheriff James Glispin, Geo. A. Bradford,
Col. Thomas L. Vought; Back left-right: Captain W. W.
Murphy, Benjamin M. Rice, Charles A. Pomeroy,
S. J Severson
Notes: There is a picture of the Posse of
Madelia that captured the Younger Brothers in 1876.
However there are seven men shown but only
six names listed.
The name that is missing is S. J Severson
and, according to the picture I have, is the man to the far
right in the front.
This information comes from the book
"Faithful Until Death" by John J Koblas about The James
Younger Raid on the First National Bank of Northfield,
Minnesota.
I notice there is a dispute as to which one
of the seven is Benjamin Rice. This book shows the man in
the middle standing in back to be Rice and the one without
facial hair is C.A. Pomeroy (the same as the historical
society says) However on your site according to Joe Herrera:
Ben is back row without face hair. (the one
listed as being Pomeroy) I would have to go along with Mr.
Herrera as this man looks like some of the other photos on
the site.
There is another set of pictures on page 179
of the book. These are individual shots that were taken
years later. These are probably accurate as far as the names
go but here the one labelled as Benjamin Rice has a full
beard so it's difficult to compare.
Hope this helps.
