First Settlers

In 1819, James H. Archibald and David Hitt were the first settlers of Pleasant Ridge.

 

James Hall Archibald born 1799,and his wife Mary A. Steele settled in Greene County in 1819 in the area near the present-day Pleasant Ridge Church. Their sons were E. Addison born 1822, Abner A. born 1824, Samuel S. born 1826, Andrew Brown born 1828 and James Steele Archibald born 1830. James Hall Archibald and sons were active in the Pleasant Ridge Church and James and many of his descendants are buried there. Andrew Brown died as a Prisoner of War in Ohio during the Civil War. Union Academy was founded in 1850 by Abner A. & E. Addison Archibald.

 

John Cockrell, born in Nash County, North Carolina married Temperance Baker and moved to Greene County in 1823. John and Tempy had nine children: Melvina, Harriet, Anna, Aquilla Winstead, Charity, John Winstead, Henry R, Isabella (Elizabeth) and Goin A.  John, Tempy, Charity, John Winstead and Aquilla are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Church Cemetery in Greene County.

 

Henry Edwards married Mariah Horton, a daughter of Jesse Horton and Sarah Chamblee. Henry and Mariah had ten children and lived on a farm east of the town of Pleasant Ridge.

 

David Hitt, one of the earliest settlers, arrived in Greene County from South Carolina in 1819. His daughter Nancy A. married Alfred Doss and settled in the area due south of the town of Pleasant Ridge near the Mt. Hebron precinct border. His daughter Edna married Benjamin Williams and settled in the Boligee area by 1823.

 

Jesse Horton and his wife Sarah Chamblee were married in Wake County North Carolina and migrated to Greene County around 1821. Jesse lived south of the town of Pleasant Ridge, near the present-day Horton Cemetery. Their sons John and William Horton settled on farms nearby. Jesse and Sarah are buried in the Horton Cemetery.

 

Nancy Hutton and sons William J., F. M., John Newton and Dr. Aquilla D. arrived in the Pleasant Ridge area in 1822 and settled on the southwest side of Pleasant Ridge not far from the Tom Bigbee river.

 

Littleberry King married Molsey Horton, daughter of Jesse Horton, in Greene County on 22 January 1828.  Littleberry owned land next to Jesse Horton. Littleberry and Molsey are buried in the Horton cemetery.

 

Steele: The family of Abner Aexander Steele and Elizabeth Deale, migrated to Greene County in 1818 from Pendleton District, South Carolina. They were the parents of thirteen children: Alexander, Mary,Elihue R., Richard G., Nancy and Elizabeth (twins), Martha, William, Abner Alexander, Jr., Jane, Susanah (died young), Esther and James. William settled in the Pleasant Ridge area and is buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

 

Benjamin Williams, father of Lawrence Williams, arrived in Greene County in 1823. Benjamin's son Lawrence (Larry) married Elizabeth Carpenter, daughter of John Carpenter and Elizabeth Upchurch.
