Greene County Alabama Queries 2004
GEWIN/GEUIN/GUIN/Help with Landowner Maps - 12/12/04 - I am a
descendant of the Geuin, Gewin, Guin family of Greene Co. The name was spelled many
different ways. My GGG-Grandfather was John Gewin who was married to Elizabeth
Hicks-Gewin. Their children were Thomas, Christopher, Charlotte, Daniel and William H.
Gewin. I recently found out they owned land and slaves in the Eutaw area. Is there access
to any sort of historical map that shows who owned what pieces of land? This would have
been in the 1840's and possibly 1830's. If you could let me know, I would greatly
appreciate it. -- Rebecca Geuin-Pollard beekacoolrose@tds.net
COOK/COKE/GOODE -12/12/04 - While researching my
ancestry on the Greene County website, I found that the name of my ancestor is misspelled
in the marriage records. His name was Warren COOK, but it is spelled Coke in the records.
He married rebecca GOODE 24 Jan 1833. I almost missed it due to the misspelling. I was
fortunate to find it when I cross-referenced by searching for the GOODE name. I also had
one question regarding info available. Is there any civil war info linked to this site? I
could not find any and wanted to see if any relatives had served in units from Greene
County. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- nichsl@cnonline.net
Help with a Forkland Historical Event -12/12/04
- I am seeking some
genealogical information on a member of my family who lived in Forkland, Alabama in the
1920s. What happened while he was there was not spoken about very often at home, but the
story goes that one day he got into a misunderstanding with another fellow and when it was
over, my great-uncle had killed the other person. Our family always said it was in self
defense. What I am attempting to do, is to find out exactly when the tragic event took
place in the 1920s. With that date. I can go to the local papers and read up about the
case and also possibly secure the actual trial transcript from the court. Would you have
any idea as to where I can find out when this took place? Would this be in the local
Forkland Police Department records - and would they still have such information or
someplace else that you can suggest? Perhaps your organization maintains such records. I
would surely appreciate any help and I thank you so very much. -- Dovid dovid@edisonlitho.com
St. Clair/May - 12/12/04 - I am
looking for the family name St. Clair. (Black) who were possibly slaves in the region
until prior to the Civil War. I believe they were property passed along to Marena though I
don't know her maiden name. She married a man named May but I'm not certain if it occured
there or in Florida. Thank you for any help you can give.-- Uglios@aol.com
LEWIS -12/12/04 - Does anyone know anything more about the Moses
LEWIS mentioned in the 2 excerpts seen below? Mentioned in 1823 in Greene County, Alabama,
Jewish, from the north originally, father of Felix LEWIS and Martha LEWIS who married John
LEWIS, son of William LEWIS. Please see the 2 earlier posts below, one from ALGREENE-D
list and one from LEWIS Genforum. I am trying to see if there is any possibility that this
Moses LEWIS connects in anyway with my Howell LEWIS who was born in the late 1700s in
Granville County, North Carolina and had a son named Moses LEWIS who lived in Jones
County, Mississippi along with several siblings including a brother named John LEWIS, born
Abt. 1820, whom I descend from. This LEWIS married into the ELLZEY family as well as
Howell LEWIS' wife and mother of the two men mentioned and the other children was Nancy
COPELAND, daughter of Rachael TUCKER and Ripley COPELAND, Sr., (RS,) of North Carolina and
Sumter Co., SC. -- Bellinda Myrick-Barnett Gmjerkins@aol.com
See the following information (2 posts immediately below):
"Does anyone have any information on the Lewis families found in Greene County, AL.?
I am trying to find a link to my great-grandfather, Noland Richard Lewis, born 1848 in Al.
His father was Richard Lewis. I find a Richard S. Lewis on Federal Land Grant Dec.1, 1829,
Elizabeth Lewis Dec.1, 1823, and Moses Lewis on Nov. 26, 1823. If you have any information
on or a link to these or any Lewis' in Greene County, I would truly appreciate your
response and any information you can share."
And in a post from Jeanie NANCE on LEWIS Genforum:
4. Joel2 LEWIS (William1) birth date unknown. Joel died 1838 in Greene Co., AL. He married
Martha LEWIS. Martha was the daughter of Moses LEWIS. Joel Lewis and his wife Martha moved
to Greene Co., AL along with his mother Elizabeth.Joel was a private in the War of 1812.
He was in Capt. Edward Clement's Co., 1st Regiment, SC State Troops., commanded by LTC
Hugh Means. His service began on 1 October 1814, and he was discharged at Charleston on 7
May 1815. The record shows he resided in Spartanburg District. According to the Alabama
Records, Greene Co., Vols. 218, 210, 180, and 242, Robert Burns was the administrator of
Joel's estate. His heirs were Elizabeth L. Ragsdale (found in Pickens Co., AL in 1836)
$185.01 Robert Burns (husband of his daughter Susan) $185.01 James Murphy $185.01 Martha
Cockrell $185.01 His wife Martha (heir of Moses Lewis, deceased) $185.01 His son Felix G.
Lewis (also an heir of Moses Lewis) $185.01. I do not think that Joel Lewis and Moses
Lewis were related. I do know there was a prominent merchant in Greene County at that
time, Moses Lewis, who was Jewish and a northerner, so it doesn't seem that there is
kinship. Dated 14 November 1836, Book D, page 262. According to Mrs. Ophelia Morrow
Phillips, Felix had a daughter named Susan, who married James Pinkney Phillips. This may
be Susan's second marriage."
HORN -11/09/04 - I am researching my family's history. Perry
Horn (my GGGrandfather) was a slave who who was born in Alabama between 1814 and 1820
(according to the 1870 &1880 census). He also had son named Perry Horn who was born in
Alabama in 1858. In 1870 & 1880 they lived in Noxubee County Mississippi according to
the census. I think after slavery ended, they left Alabama and went to Mississippi. I am
trying to find out anything that I can, regarding Perry Horn and the Horn family that
owned him as a slave. I think that J.H Horn or L.W. Horn were the slaveowners and that
they both lived in Boligee Greene County Alabama. Perry Horn Jr., who lived into the 1900s
related to relatives that they he was born at the tail end of slavery, and mentioned Eutaw
Alabama as the place where he was born. J.H. Horn and L.W. Horn are the only two families
in Greene County Alabama that owned slaves in 1860. Basically I'm looking for any
documentation or guidance that would help me in my research. Thanks in advance. -- Michael

CHAMBERS/ WAITS -11/09/04 - I am searching for information on my great
grandmother, Margaret Chambers. The only info I do have is that she married my great
grandfather John Waits in Alabama. I believe this occurred around 1880-1884. Their
daughter, my grandmother, Lela Waits was born about 1885. In 1900 according to the Federal
Census John was already married to a woman named Massalee McCray and they had a one year
old baby boy. They lived in Sumter County in the Gaston area. Lela was fifteen, her
sisters were Margaret, age twelve and Hattie Bell age ten. I believe Margaret Chambers had
died by 1897 or 1898 and she may have died in childbirth. We do not know because my
grandmother Lela died when my dad was only about 6 or 7 years of age and he was the oldest
living child. Lela married Jeff Gardner in Marengo County, AL in 1908. If anyone can help
with this I would really appreciate it. I know there were Chambers in Greene County during
this time but I do not know if that will help. Thank you for helping. --- Bobbie Terry

REYNOLDS/ RICKS -11/09/04 - Greene County Probate records show that
Jefferson Reynolds, b 1812 SC, died July 15, 1853 and his wife, Lavinia (Ricks), b 1827
NC, died November 4, 1853 after giving birth to her third child, Jefferson Reynolds, JR.,
on August 6, 1853. Jefferson JR. died in Decemer of 1853. After the parents death, their
plantation, the "Sands" with 455 acres of cultivated land, was put up for public
auction in 1855. P. P. Barham was the buyer. The "Sands" was located about half
way between the towns of Mt. Hebron and Clinton in Greene County, Allabama. I am loooking
for the burial place of my gggrandparents. -- RLHSIDEWINDER@aol.com
SELLERS -11/09/04 - I am searching for the birth date of Margaret
Jane Sellers. She was the last child of Elijah and Nancy Drummond Sellers. The Bealuh
Baptist Church Annual Report of 1891 states that Janie Sellers, daughter of Elijah Sellers
died on December 22, 1891. I find her in the 1880 census at age nine, she must have been
born in 1871, but what date? If you have such information, please post. -- "Curtis Sellers" curtzz@comcast.net
LAUDERDALE -11/09/04 - I had an uncle living in Knoxville, Greene County, Alabama on March
7th 1847. He was a scholar and tutor...perhaps he was teaching in Knoxville during that
year. I would like to document his stay in Knoxville. Does the town still exist and are
records available on the white villagers from that point in time? He was William Francis
Lauderdale. -- J.L. Falk jlfalk@comcast.net

WILLIAMS -11/09/04 - On your web page you show: "WILLIAMS Family: Isaac Williams was a Captain in Col. Henry
Dyers Regiment of the TN Militia during the Creek Indian War. He was severely
wounded in the Battle of Talledega in November 1813 and served until 25 Dec 1813. He drew
a disability pension from 1818 until his death in 1847. He lived in Bedford Co, TN in
1817, in Perry Co, AL in 1821, in Greensboro, Greene Co, AL in 1822, in Carroll Co, MS in
1839 and until his death before August 1847, in Choctaw Co, MS. In 1839, he said he move
to Carroll Co, MS to live with his sons and sons-in-law."
I believe you'll find Isaac alive and well living with his son Paul WIlliams in the
1850 census for Choctaw County, Mississippi, listed as being 76 years of age. The date of
1847 that you quote I believe is merely the final date listed in his pension record as
that was the date of his final move which was from Carroll County, Mississippi to then
adjacent Choctaw County. (Montgomery County was formed from Choctaw and Carroll County in
1871, and thus today separates the two counties.) Isaac was most likely living with his
son-in-law Nathan Pitman's family while in Carroll County. Nathan Pitman had married
Isaac's daughter Hannah Williams.
Due to the lost of most records of Choctaw County to fires and an apparently lack of
known extant tombstone for Isaac, the date of his exact date is unknown, but since his
pension record makes no further reference to any additional moves and since his name is
not listed in the 1860 census household of his son Paul Williams, or for that matter in
the 1860 census for Choctaw County, it is presumed he died between 1850 and 1860. (He did
have other kinsmen in the area too, but his name is not found listed in the census for
these households either . Also, a former slave of the Williams family, a Mrs. Wilson,
interviewed in the 1940's and again in the early 1950's (Mrs. Wilson lived to be 100 years
old) had no recollection of Paul Williams' father still living, although she could
remember the Union calvary in December of 1864 as they passed through on their raid to
burn the mills at Bankston, Miss., ransacking the Williams family home, bundling up all of
the family's china in the dinning room table cloth and then breaking dropping and breaking
the pieces their route to Bankston. [This was the Union calvary of then Colonel Grierson,
later General Grierson who went on after the war to command the famous "Buffalo
Soldiers," whose force were making their second famous/infamous raid through the
heart of the State of Mississippi, this time the target being the last remaining operating
shoe factory in the South, shoes being the Civil War what ball bearings were to World War
II. The Williams family got off well though, as the home their neighbors, Allen Mather
Powell, Jr. and his mother Frances (Lindsey) Powell Garrett, was torched and burned to the
ground. (The first raid of Colonel Grierson in 1863 is the raid dramatized, but highly
fictionalized, in John Ford and John Wayne's classic, "The Horse Soldiers.")]

WARMACK -10/12/04 - Being a
Nebraskan myself, I didn't know that Greensboro was once a part of Green County. My
husband had an ancestor born there and I can't find a thing out about him. His name was

any Warmacks living there in that year. Thank you. -- Phyllis Warmack whiteduv36@aol.com
CAMERON/GRISSOM -10/12/04 - I am searching for my g-grandfather,
Augustus/Gus Cameron (b. Oct 1874), who married (don't know when) Harriet/Hattie Grissom
(b. Dec 1880 - 29 Jun 1949) Harriet is the daughter of Harvey Grissom (b. 1849) &
Bettie Moneiee or Moneice (b. 1855) Family & relatives mentioned that Augustus had
several brothers, Dank, Leroy & Walter, it's possible that there may be another
brother, Charles. Harvey & Bettie's other children were Nancy (b. 1876), Percy (b.
1886) and Ruben (b. 1896). Percy was married possibly twice and Nancy once (Grant). In
1930, Percy, Nancy and her daughter, Mary (b. 1917), were living w/parents and Percy being
the Head of Household. Gus & Hattie lived & married in Sumter County, AL
(Gainesville) and had four children, 1) Sumner, Feb 1900; 2) William (Harvey) 1901;
3) D.B. (Dave )1903; 4) Lydia (Lida) 1906. Info Searching For: i) Date or year
of Augustus' death, ii) Parents of Augustus and other sibling info. Hopefully,
someone of the Cameron/Grissom line will read this and respond, where we can
obtain/exchange information. This info was compiled from family & relatives, Census
Records (1900, 1920, 1930) and the Death Certificate of Harriet (Grissom) Cameron.--

DUNLAP Info - 09/05/04
- My husband and I are in the processing
of buying a historic home in Eutaw. The home is on Mesopotamia Street and has a sign in
the front yard that says "Dunlap-Parkins 1902." The Parkins were the last
owners, and they'd been there since 1972. I'm trying to research the Dunlap half of the
name. I've found lots of Dunlaps in Greene County via census records but have no idea
which ones built my house. I'd also love to fill in the gaps. We haven't moved in yet
(still trying to sell our house in Tuscaloosa), so I haven't been able to dig into the
records at the courthouse ... if that's even what I'll need to do. Anyone know anything
about the Dunlaps or this house? The previous owner said he heard it was once a duplex. Thanks. Kristin kmlwalters@bellsouth.net
Clinton, AL - 09/05/04
- My grandmother's family is from a
little town in Green County called Clinton. The town barely exists anymore, and I've been
trying to collect photographs of historic Clinton from the late 1800 s through the fire
that destroyed most of the town in 1904 to present day when about 10 years ago, the
Alabama DOT destroyed what was left of the town with a crazy change to the highway through
town. What I have so far, which is not a whole lot, is located at http://www.ScottSmithOnline.com/interests/clinton
. Does anyone have any materials or sources that might be of help? I looked in the
Tuscaloosa Public Library and the Greene County Library but I already had everything that
they had. Any help would be greatly appreciated. --Scott Smith scott.a.smith@alumni.vanderbilt.edu

HARRIS/ FULGHUM - 08/22/04 - I just stumbled upon this website; it
potentially could be very helpful for me and my family. My grandfather was named Homer
Harris and he was born approximately in 1898. He was African-American and lived in Eutaw
for several years before moving to Tuscaloosa. In or around 1916, he married a woman named
Mary Fulghum. I have been told that Fulghum was a common surname in Eutaw then, and that
the original Fulghums were from Scotland, emigrating to Alabama sometime in the 19th
century. Mary's father was a man named Joe Fulghum and he would be my great-grandfather. I
am looking for any information, however anecdotal, anyone might have on either the Harris
or Fulghum family. Thanks very much; please send any respones to Donald.Cabell bonhomme40@comcast.net
BRENNER - 08/22/04 - My grandmother's maiden name was Minnie Brenner. She married a

Management Records indicate that Dorrel bought land in Greene County, so I believe that
for a time he settled there, possibly along with his sister, Nancy Magdalene and her
husband, John B. Brown. Dorrel's mother, Magdalen Love Ford accompanied the migration. I'm
a descendant of Dorrel and Susanna; they are my fourth great-grandparents. I've always
felt that Susanna's life has been a mystery in so many ways -- I've never been able to
learn her maiden name, only that she was born in 1789, and that she died in Greene County.
If there is any way to find her grave, I want to do so. Please, please help if you can. If
you have any suggestions for where I might find information even if you can't help
directly, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!-- LaRue Foster lfoster@earthlink.net

will have time to work on it soon.-- Harriett Cooper carmeliteshabit@earthlink.net [Note: I

GORE: Orphans Court Records - 07/08/04 - I
noticed on the Greene Co., AL. website that the Orphans Court Records, Vol. B. was in the
Probate Court Office at Eutaw, AL. There were several Gores listed that I am researching
but I cannot find anything online other than page numbers. The two I am looking for are as
follows:
Eliazer (Eleazer) Gore, pgs. 7, 188, 272
Samuel Goore, pg. 103
There is an Eli Goon, pg. 199 that could be Gore, Goore, but I'm not sure.
I don't know if the two Gores are related and were heirs of the same person or just
witnesses to someone else's probate. Does anyone know how I can locate these page
transcripts. Do I write the courthouse? If so, could you supply me with their address? Any
help would be appreciated.-- Norma Anderson NORMAWAND@aol.com
